Ryan...maybe I'm mis-reading your post. Are you saying that with the Sumo's , when hitched up, the rear is compressed to the point that there is no "spring" left and it's riding on the Sumo's ???
The Sumos start to hold weight without much load, because they're much taller than the stock bump stop. They're like air bags without the air, and they're progressive unlike rubber options such as Timbrens.

Others more versed in suspensions may jump in to correct me, but if your Sumo's are in contact with the frame that would mean you basically have no suspension other than what the Sumo's are supplying. It would also mean that your shocks, as good as they are, aren't compressing other than the few inches that the Sumo's would compress.
I'm running a trailer with the same tongue weight as you, towing with a 2 wd Sport, up graded rear shocks, but still with the stock bump stops. With the Roadmaster Active Suspension I added, it raised the rear of the Ranger about 1 1/2 inches, but under load it compresses back to stock height, and there is a good 3 inches of space between the frame and the bump stop. Thats with the wd hitch in use
Have you taken your rig on the road since the Sumo's were installed ?

Yep we've done a few hours of towing with them and think they're great.

Check out the website. SumoSprings - SuperSprings® International, Inc. (superspringsinternational.com)

They work in conjunction with the leafs and shocks.

EDIT: Here's a video that compares their SuperSprings to SumoSprings, as they make both. I think SuperSprings are similar to the RoadMasters you have

In this other video they compare to airbags and Timbrens. In that one he can be heard saying that one of the downsides of airbags is that they basically replace your stock suspension, whereas Sumos don't:

On my 2008 Tacoma I had the Timbrens and on my 2011 Tacoma I had the Sumo Springs. I liked the Sumo springs more. Both work well as long as there is no weight on the bed/hitch that they are not engaged or if there is enough weight that the frame rail is fully in contact. I used to pull a 20' flatbed with my 2008 Taco with the Timbrens. When the trailer was loaded with offroad toys, the ride was very good. When the trailer was empty, there was a small gap between the frame rail and the Timbren. The ride was awful. LOL, every bump was jarring.

show us in your cargo camper!
A few years back I did post some but I'll do it again but there really isn't must to see. It was setup to haul a fellows ATV but we wanted to haul our 6x6 which is longer, so we pulled the appliances out and 1/2 the added wall seen on the trailers left side. Its small and simple,, like us. We camp without power and a water supply.

I installed SumoSprings recently and wanted to share some pics. They're not the best pics since they're not from the exact same angle (the first one isn't even from the same trip) but the effects can be seen (especially if you can flip through them in slideshow).

1 is without SumoSprings. No weight-distribution (chains loose).
2 is after installing SumoSprings. No weight-distribution (chains loose).
3 is after installing SumoSprings. Weight-distribution is active (chains tight).

Unfortunately I don't have photo without SumoSprings and with weight-distribution at the same angle to compare.. but I do have this:

The difference that SumoSprings make when not using weight-distribution is quite substantial.
  • Without SumoSprings the rear of the truck sags 1/4" lower than the front (I have eibach shocks in the rear so it would likely sag even more with the stock shocks).
  • With SumoSprings the rear remains 1/2" higher than the front. Ride quality is much improved and there's less bouncing and floating in the rear.
The difference that SumoSprings make when combined with weight-distribution is less substantial but still very noticeable and appreciated.
  • Without SumoSprings there is a lot of dependence and stress on the WD hitch/chains/bars/whatever to hold the rear of the truck up so that it's not sagging. I had my hitch set so that the rear was about 1" higher than the front, FYI.
  • With SumoSprings the rear holds itself up and weight seems more easily distributed to the front of the truck. The rear ends up being 3/4" higher than WD without the SumoSprings, and it's much easier to hook and unhook the hitch/chains/bars/whatever.
This is with about ~650 lbs on the hitch.

Pretty happy with this upgrade. It wasn't easy though, since removing the stock bump stops turned into a huge project in itself (bolts snapped, bolt extractor broke off, etc etc).
Didn't see it listed. Which model SS did you use? The 1000 or 1500# version?

Towed my travel trailer on a round trip into the white mountains in NH. 170 miles each way one tank of gas each way. 12 mpg. At times i didnt even realize it was there.

I did have a gas station stop picked out half way . When i got there their credit card machines were down. So we kept going.

What kind of hitch did you use, and how tight can you turn?
