Are My Tires Still Safe?

No... call around and see if someone will squeeze you in earlier. If you have to ask, deep down you know the answer. It isn’t only the blow out scenario, but general loss of control on slick roads. If you have prior knowledge of a potentially dangerous situation and you drive anyway and subsequently hurt someone else you are negligent. By posting these photos you have documented your own case. Horse is out of the barn now. However you manage it, get new tires ASAP

I just went out and checked the air pressure in my tires ahead of a trip I've got coming up and I saw these cracks in the tread. The cracking is kind of uniform throughout al of the tread and tires. Sidewalls look good. Stock Duratrac FX4 tires.

As @ATGC mentioned, those aren't Duratracs, they are Dynapro Hankooks.

Here are some photo's of the Hankooks on our Ranger that has 17,000 miles. No cracking at all like your tires have.

Cost isn't an issue. Timing is. I leave at 3 am Thursday morning. I just checked around and can't get an appointment until the 5th.

Perhaps you could get an appointment at your destination? That way any risk would only be half the trip. I've had to work preventative maintence in on long road trips before due to mileage.

I found this for you. Most likely too late. That said, They are tiny cracks. Just go to work and bring it to a tire shop ASAP. I' sure they have been there for a while now so the chances of an immediate blow out is small (IMHO)

Yeah. I don't know why I typed Duratracs - I was shopping those for replace tires. I have the Hankook Dynopros.

I think my last off-roading trip is what caused the issue. There was a very long length of trail that was shale, and I only aired down 10 lbs. My tires were actually over inflated at the time to 35 lbs. So they only got aired down the 25 lbs. on the trail. I'm thinking that shale was rough on the not-aired-down-enough tires.

I'm going to drive the Ranger up to work today and get one of my friends at Fleet Services to look at it and give me a pass or fail.

When I saw the potential issue last night I went into panic mode because I pretty much knew there isn't time to get this fixed. No-one has tires in stock for same day installation!

This is my opportunity to get 27570R17 tires installed when I get back though!

I've got about. 25" of tread on these and I'm still above the wear bars.

I think they look fine. Those look like battle scars and not tread separation. But as a service advisor, I’m suggesting 4 new 275/70R17 tires just in case. ?

Just a thought here. I do not know your trip route but you might consider a shop on the way that can get the tires in and install them in an hour or so.

As for appointments, they may not have one available but most places take walk-ins. If you explain your situation they may squeeze you in. You might have to leave it with them until after work. You could just by a coworker lunch for a ride back to work and a ride to pick it up.

Personally, if there is any doubt in my mind I would replace them but that is just me. Good luck and safe travels.

For short term your tires maybe safe, but for long term no.

A look at your tires indicates that they maybe dying to old age. If that is the case they most likely will not blow up in short term, but their ability to stick to the road and stop is already degraded.

You can check the age from DOT mark. Usually 5-7 years (+2 year shelf life) is enough for any tire.

If you are asking the question, "are my tires still safe," then it is time to replace the tires. Why gamble your life (and, potentially, those of other drivers and passengers) to avoid postponing a trip? Wait until you have four new ones and then take the trip in safety. Happy trails!

Couple of problems. There is no postponing this trip. It's a funeral that was delayed by COVID. Also, no one has my dam tires in stock. So They can get me in, but they don't have tires to install. Ughhhh.

On the plus side, the fleet manager where I work says send it. He said my tires are nearing the end of their service life but the cracking is not deep and the tires have some miles left to them, but not much.
