What are you guys towing?

Also towed my toolbox when I changed jobs. Went offroading the day before as you can tell. About 1000lbs plus trailer weight. The Forester I towed was like 5300 lbs with the trailer (had a built in brake). I now have a trailer brake as I plan to rent a trailer this summer, probs 6,000-7,000lbs as it has to sleep 6-8

Safety chains are better in some situations.
Emergency brake wire is better in some situations.

The best solution is just taking a extra few minutes while hitching up, making sure the trailer is actually properly attached. And that the trailer and truck do not have any damages or anything that can cause the coupling to fail.

What I usually do is hook it all up, bend down to make sure the trailer hitch is properly "grasping" the ball.. Get your mind out of the gutter, it's not that dirty. lol.

Then while the parking brake is on, I usually climb onto the back of the trailer and jump like a crazy person to check that the rear of the truck bounces.

Actually saved me one time, I went to pick up a rental trailer. Hooked it up, it seemed to be all OK. But when I climbed on the back and did my jump test.. On the third jump, the trailer went off the ball, so that saved me big time, lol.

Just spending those few extra minutes and being a bit paranoid is the best solution.

We have a trailer so heavy, you can't jump on its bumper and raise it off the hitch. I've attached trailers in the dark when you can't see if its coupled by looking up. (yes we carry a flash light)

Shit happens that you can't predict. They are called safety chains for a reason. Brakes fail, what if the trailer is on it's side? what if you lose a tire? What if you lose two tires? (this happens a lot in Michigan due to pot holes) At least if you're attached to it you have a better chance of keeping it in your lane until it's stopped entirely.

Towed the Forester about 175 Km hilly roads, but not the mountains. Barely felt it back there except when I hit bumps. The last photo I think I was at max payload. Had all 4 seats full of stuff and the bed full of stuff. Lots of it heavy like a box full of ammunition parts and a full motorcycle (disassembled). Seemed like the rear was level with the front (parked on a hill at the pump in the photo) and drove 1000km like that.

Yup! Doing a rebuild for my sister. I was bringing a bunch of her stuff with me because she was moving from northern BC to Victoria so I brought the bike to rebuild it. She had put it all together and then took it back apart to fully rebuild and now I have it. It's a DT1 variant. Not sure on the specifics.

Yes, but it won't cross the median and skewer a minivan full of children on their way to Grandmas house. The point of the chains is to keep the trailer under control and able to stop, not save your truck from it.

Duh. I know what the chains are for. Where in my post does it say I don't know what chains are for or don't agree with using them.

I am towing a similar sized trailer. I find that as long as I keep to 55 mph it tows fine.

Just an observation and opinion on towing/weights/capabilities etc., not looking for an argument just offering information. I purchased a Ranger for 95% of my needs but NOT towing a large camper nearly 2X the length and close to the weight of the TV. My TV is a 2003 Excursion gasser and is a very confident ride while pulling our #5,500 28’ camper and everything that goes with 7 people. My previous TV was a 2003 F150 and was NOT a fun trip. Pulling the same or heavier AND a longer camper would be white knuckle for me. Don’t want to see anyone get into trouble.

Maybe I’ll hook the trailer to the Ranger this summer and run down the highway for a comparison and report back.

We tow trailers and campers lots and have done so for many years. I'm a proponent of staying well below the max tow capacity.
