Lots of folks hate those stupid little plastic screw inserts that hold the cover on to access the oil filter, and for good reason, they suck.

If you're not opposed to opening up the 3 holes very slightly with a step drill, you can install these GM Style fasteners:

On my 2wd truck, there is nothing behind the holes to get in the way, but if you choose to go this route, double check. I'm not responsible if you chew up a wire harness. Folks in the salt belt would probably want to put a little paint on the metal afterwards, or some form of protectant.

Now it's just a simple twist to take the rubber shield off.

I've replaced mine with rivnuts and thumb screws. I believe Ford did this on later model years.

Pretty much anything is better than the stupid things Ford installed on mine from the factory.

They're ok for about the first two times, and then they're shit.

You mind sharing a picture of the access with the thumb screws or a link to the ones you used? I picked up a rivnut set and this sounds like my next project.

For those of us that don't care for the magnet idea.

I just leave all the tabs off. the flap will tuck in and doesn't move. Easy-peasy!

What keeps the magnets attached to the liner?
Nothing other then magnetic force is needed.

I saved some bucks and used old enterprise class hard drive magnets. There is absolutely no way these things will come off accidentally, I've even used the same type of magnets to hold my coat to a filing cabinet.
