And now I broke down and bought the tuner haha. Real talk though. If you look at this in a gear head mindset... I can get a 87 tune that will not compromise cheap gas and the integrity of the engine... if you wanna play for a tank of gas, get 93 and swap the tunes. I think this is a win win.
Except that the transmission re-learn can take several hundred (maybe up to 500) miles to adjust properly after you switch to a new tune. You'll run through a tank of 93 before that happens. Livernois suggested swapping tunes about a week before you anticipate needing to use it (like in the case of a towing tune). And only swap between 89/93 tunes when you've emptied the gas tank and refilled to prevent running on too low of octane.

With the 10 speed I found the relearn takes up to 2,500 miles sometimes. A pain yes but the truth. That is why I stick with the tow tune as my all time tune.

Oof, that's even more than I thought.

How's the towing tune for every day driving? Is it an 89 octane tune? And do you still get pretty good performance gains?

Relearn ?
I'd say it's more like smoothens out the shifts. I've tried 3 of the 5 tunes and every time I flash between them I'd say it takes about 2 tanks to smoothen out. At first the 91-93 performance tune is harsh shifting then by the end of the first tank it's better and the second one feels fine. Of course this is just going by seat of the pants feel and not scientific data. ?

Hard to quantify "seat of the pants feel" when you've crapped them full after punching it...

Relearn?....Unleashed Has the transmission Tuned, my Truck was the Prototype..
Regards
The tow tune is a flex tune from 87 to 93 octane. Here in Colorado the highest we have is 91 that I am aware of and that's all I run in my truck anyway. As for daily driving with it things do very well with the truck. I havent had any issues with driving performance.

For the transmission is is "quote on quote" Tuned but it still has to learn. It took a while for mine to learn and if you didn't have to learn yours after a tune then i woyld question the tune because the transmission needs to learn the truck and you. With a different tune that becomes crucial!!

Has anyone put their Ranger on a dyno machine with the Livernois Tow Tune??? I'd be interested in seeing the results, and I'm sure others would also be interested to see actual numbers.

I personally run the tow tune on my truck which is my daily driver. The tow tune is a much better option when off-roading. The picture doesn't do the hill justice but it is a grade in the low 20's and the ground is a fine powder type of dirt kind of like walking in flour. My truck struggled a lot with the performance tune but in the end always made it up. Then when I switched to the tow tune I would climb up like it was nothing. After that experience I decided to always leave the tow tune installed. My tires are LT265/65r18 BFG K02 and I leveled my truck with Fox 2.0 coil overs, I also air down to 15 psi when off-roading.

@Ace Holliday has had his on the dyno but I forgot what they were. He's also running the FP tune so maybe when he sees this he will post his results.

He did a transmission tune at the same time, kept it for one week daily driving and in and out of the Dyno ...no “Relearn” ....some of your reply’s are ... know it all Snarky ...
Regards
I think you're misinformed. The transmission software is always "learning". The goal is to constantly make minor adjustments for smoother shifts and better power transfer in various conditions. This process even happens every time you unplug (or replace) your battery.

No matter what tuning company you go with - as soon as you change the ECU tuning, the transmission has to "re-learn" or re-adapt to the new parameters. And this happens in software, it's not something a tuner can just "set" and forget. New shift points, new fuel tables, adjusted engine timing, adjusted boost, all can affect the way the transmission shifts. So even your Unleashed tune will have a learning period after you flash the tune to the vehicle.

I'm supposed to receive my Livernois tuner on Wednesday, can't wait to take her out to Bandimere Speedway in the spring and see how she runs on the clock @ 1/4 mi. with the mods I've installed:thumbsup:

How are you guys estimating these "learning " miles?

The manual doesn't state a specific number.
All results may vary by user but I myself watched the miles from the time i tuned to when it smothed put finally. When I first tuned I had the high octane performance tune. After that i installed the tow tune and it took close to 2,500 miles to learn.

So what’s the difference between performance soft shift learning and the performance shift learning? I have no issues with the way my truck shifts, for power boosting I simply use the sport mode. I am probably just going to use the tow tune all the time.

There is no difference in the learning. The difference is going to be the shift feel. After the transmission finished learning it was all good and the soft shift wasnt needed.

I can verify that "feel" as mine (and/or me) has learned a 'sweet spot' where the acceleration and shifting is as smooth as glass, constant and where I hope it will be for 100% of all driving. I think a majority of the snap shifting is caused by inconsistent pedal use...namely the lunk driving (me).
