Those numbers are based on 93 octane.

Of course, tuners always list the 93 tune, itā€™s better marketing. Fine with me, I only run 93 anyways. Always have and will on FI engines.

Wish I had access to 93. To make more power Iā€™ll be running on e30 or e50.

Not everyone has 93 available. 91 is the max in kalifornia.

Interesting, I never knew that. Haven't spent any time out West, unfortunately. I get out there eventually.

This is my first turbo engine and I'm trying to run 93 but it's 90 cents more a gallon than regular right now where I live! Hard to justify it every fill up. Does switching back and forth mess with the computer learning?

I have no idea, honestly. Before going back to Ford, I had two different BMWs (135i and X3 35i) that both required premium. When I got my '15 Fusion new in 2015, I ran one tank of regular, then tried 93. The car ran SO much better, so I only ever ran 93 after that. My ranger has seen 93 since day one.

My wife's not a car person and she can even tell a noticeable difference in her '17 Explorer Sport.

Look for a Costco nearby. Itā€™s usually .60c a gallon cheaper than any other place on premium. I get 91 for less than others places charge for 87. As for switching back and forth, it wonā€™t hurt anything. The ECU is able to adapt without issue just donā€™t expect the same power on lower octane.

Around 25 years ago we used to have 92 but that went away like common sense in this state.

It takes a week or two for the OAR (Octane Adjustment Reading), to compensate when you switch. It just may not take advantage when you switch to the higher unless is for a few tanks.

I wouldnā€™t go as far to say it takes weeks but it is an active learning process that adjusts instantly to the fuel you use to gather a cumulative rating of effective octane. The ideal -1.0 multiplier is achieved if the fuel is of higher octane than the required minimum. It starts out at 0.0 and the learned octane multiplier can go from +1.0 to -1.0, being a multiplier the -1.0 is our target. All of the data collected over time... is used to calculate and adjust this learned octane value.
