well i have changed my oil 3x since i got all paranoid over fuel dilution which i have had . I have 3800 on the clock on my 19 ,but don't laugh but I have access to baby disposable diapers and i lay one in the trough under the filter and it catches all the oil from filter no mess no fuss. The worst part is when you pop that drain plug holy bejesus it does everywhere :)
It’s far better to catch the oil and drop it off to be recycled. Diapers soaked with used motor oil are most likely classified as hazardous waste. Even if they are not legally hazardous waste, they don’t belong in the landfill with household trash.

Obviously, its better to catch it, but when ya cant cuz ya have no idea where it's gonna go (my point here) it's really a choice of catch oil and discard or not catch oil and clean up with paper towel, rags, etc and discard...

Can't tell you where the oil is going to end up, but I can tell you that it ain't gonna be on my garage floor again! ?

Well the little bit of oil that is on that diaper if that's going to cause the balance of the universe to go out of balance so be it . I have been around enough garages and seen enough stuff thrown away that I don't believe that synthetic oil is going to cause major issues. I do take my oil too advanced and recycle it but that little bit on the diaper goes in a plastic bag tied shut and goes with the trash. When that oil from the drain plug goes all over the place because you never know where it is going to run and I clean it up with rags where do you think they go in my trash can.
I am sensitive to the environment but I am definitely not a tree hugger.

I just changed my oil yesterday. Didn't spill a drop. The trough on top of the frame rail works great to channel the oil from the filter out to my drain pan, placed just inside and towards the rear of the front driver side wheel. I always crack the oil filter just a few threads at first, and let the oil drain out of it slowly. It takes a few seconds longer, but controls the oil draining into the little trough much better. I also installed a fumoto valve when I bought the truck, and the hose I attach to it for oil changes easily reaches over to the drain pan location while the filter trough is still dripping.

I use a little carb / choke cleaner to spray out the oil filter housing, and to rinse out the oil catch area under the filter as well as the drain trough that runs on top of the frame. No drips on the garage floor or driveway after the change that way.

Oil changes on my Ranger are among the easiest and cleanest I ever do. I own 4 cars for the family, and the other 3 are messier/more involved.

This is why this old man doesn't change oil anymore.

I haven't changed my own oil yet, but I learned to use a piece of aluminum foil back when I had my Lincoln MKVIII LSC (a car designed for a V6 but got a version of the Cobra DOHC V8)

Removing the oil filter required some advanced yoga positions and a degree in Tetris also helped.

OIl ended up everywhere since you had to tilt/rotate the filter through multiple planes in 3-dimensional space to coax it out of the hole it was in.

The foil can be bent to whatever shape works best to direct the oil where you want, it stays in place, and you just pitch it when done.
I had a Cougar that was the same. Worse oil change chore of any of the vehicles I have owned. (But that V8 could really move that Cougar along). I used waxed paper to funnel the oil around objects to the oil pan same as you used the aluminum foil.

Femco oil drain valve installed! I also had a fuel smell to the oil and it was over 6.2 qts when it was emptied. Will probably change in another 3k to see what it looks like second go around.

Well Femco was a bust. Stuck a box under the truck to check for leaks and sure enough here is what I found.

Oof. That's not a reassuring performance out of your new drain valve. I'm on team Fumoto - really like my drain valve, never had it leak.

Glad you were able to save the oil!

I had a fumoto before and it worked fine. Might just go back to that one
