I checked the owners manual for the Mustang (2.3 Ecoboost) and it calls for 5W-30 but when racing they call for draining the oil and replacing with 5W-50. The Focus RS specifies 5W-50 (no distinction between racing and normal driving). It would appear our Ranger 2.3 Ecoboosts should handle heavier weight oils just fine unless there is something peculiar or different about our Ranger 2.3s.

My last two Blackstone reports indicated the viscosity was closer to 5W-20. Jim, please keep us posted on what you learn with the 5W-40. I would like to follow your lead on my next oil change.
Also added Hot Shot friction reducer, the specified amount. Am getting about a mile and a half better fuel mileage.

OK it's story time fellows and girls. I have 2200 miles on the clock, the oil has been changed 5 times the last time it was changed at 500 mile interval and I sent an oil sample in to Blackstone they return the analysis's with a 3.8 fuel dilution. ( According to them it should be less than 2.0) and that was only 500 miles. I also have another sample sent to them with another 500 mile interval and waiting for them to send me the results.

In the mean time I contacted Ford resolution and told them I would like the vehicle fixed but it has already been to the dealer 3 times and they do not know what to do. I opened a case to have them buy the vehicle back we will see how that goes.
it really sucks as I like my ranger but I cannot change the oil every 500 miles. This is no reflection on the dealer they get no support from Ford engineers all they try and do is throw parts at it to see if it sticks the 1st time it was in they said I had a bad injector supposedly a leak down test over night. they replaced the injector that didn't help I have owned the truck for one year. This issue has been going on since 500 miles. It just seems like ford does not have an answer. Blackstone said my Flash point is 300゚ and I would imagine the oil is like water and I really feel a long term issue will develop. And the last 500 miles were trips of over 65-100 miles.
The only plus side to this is they gave me a loaner and this is what they gave me.
209 miles on the clock. Please excuse any spelling or punctuation as I'm trying to do this from my phone

Rick,
I have a very similar experience as yours, even though I have only made two trios to the dealer with NO resolution. The Ford Engineers were of no help for the dealership. Ford's last comment was they don't trust outside labs and no repairs are needed! My fuel dilution was 4.3%.
How are you pursuing the "buy the vehicle back"? What exactly did you have to do in case I want to take this sort of action? Thanks!

Talk to MotoWojo on the buy back plan, he didn't have much success with it so far!

Or don't. From what I remember, he verbally requested it of the customer relations people and was blown off. According to page 34 of the '19 warranty guide, they require written notification for any lemon law claim. https://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,4670,7-127-96435-23885--,00.html would be a better place to start imo. Which also means you probably need to exercise Ford's arbitration process via BBB Auto Line (pg 33).

He wasn't eligible for lemon law in his state it was 1 year and he was past the time limit.

If no repairs are needed what is Ford going to do about over filled crankcase levels since by their own admission in the owners manual.

Yes, and I didn't explain myself well (rarely do). He took the approach that Ford would be reasonable, which they absolutely haven't been with him. So following the process outlined by Ford and the state's lemon law is the only safe approach for anyone considering that way out. Me, I'm currently shrugging off the problem again rearing its ugly head in my truck. Next time maybe I'll also get a Bronco Sport loaner at least.

Well I drove the Bronco a little bit tonight the best part of it so far was the heated steering wheel. I really believe my ranger has a lot more power then this Bronco. It's kind of strange when you get in it the cluster and the radio plays a short video which seems like a bunch of gingerbread to me.
But more importantly I really don't think I'll get anywhere with the buyback as for does not Want to buy back a problem that I am sure they are well aware of . The sad thing is that most people will not even realize they have the problem because most people do not check their oil on a new vehicle. it will be 5 or 6000 miles be for they realize they have a problem. I am wondering if it could be a ring issue maybe at takes 5 or 6000 miles until the ring seat I don't know, grasping at straws here

Got my Blackstone results recently. I had a "trace" of fuel with just under 4k miles on the oil. My oil level has been stable and does not smell like fuel. The trace may be because it's cold here and I may not be getting the oil up to full temp lately. Anyway, I'll take it. Here is the report for those interested.

This looks really good. Being in Nevada your temperatures are warmer than members that live in the north. Do you do much in the way of short in town trips or mostly longer highway?

Northern Nevada high desert can get cold. 19 degrees this morning and it's been single digits a few times this winter. I would say mostly short trips. I live 7 miles out of town so typical use is around 15 miles round trip. About the only time it gets an extended drive lately is if head out in the desert for a day or haul my trailer out for some camping.

Looks a lot better than mine (4% fuel dilution) My Ford dealer wanted me to give them a excellent review if I receive a survey. I said how can I give you a great review when you haven't done anything to fix the fuel dilution problem. They're saying they can't find any other Rangers with this problem per TSB's or recalls so my trucks fine and Ford hasn't determined how much fuel in the oil is too much. Very frustrated.
