Both Leaf Springs Broke

I can't speak to the probability of both breaking, but $1700 for replacement seems steep.. You could upgrade to Icon, EMU, or even tremor springs for that much.

If Ford is going to charge you for these... yeah then definitely go aftermarket. Hell for that price you could get a nice set of Deaver's.

Thanks all. It was a clean break both sides. I just took a photo looking up into the bracket on the driver's side - the passenger side looks about the same. I see some rust on the edges but I assume that might be normal for a five year old truck? I'll be sure to get several photos of the break when the springs are removed.

Hell, the sticker's still on there! If that plastic/paper thing and its glue stayed on there, it's clearly a defect. Not wear and tear and abuse, imo. And the bushings don't look distorted.

I bet they might start sweating if you ask to keep the old ones (as @Grumpaw wisely suggested), and they absolutely should give them to you since you're paying for them.

Easy for me to sit here and talk, but you do what you gotta do. If you're handy and have the right tools, swapping the springs out isn't terribly difficult and many here have suggested outstanding upgrades for less than Ford wants.

And calls farther up the chain may be in order because if this is a defect (it sure seems like one), then this is a significant safety issue on many Rangers.

WOW - Clearly a MFG Defect of the springs, bushings appear intact, but even if worn it should have not caused them to break and would have been noted as a popping noise over bumps if worn that badly.
I am going with they were cracked and when lifted off the ground the crack split open due to the weight of the axle.
Very strange indeed.

If you were close to me I have a pair I removed from my ranger in the garage in the scrap pile.

I'd have tremor springs installed for sure if I had it done at the dealer or aftermarket if someplace else.

That's pretty scary. In my experience there is no such thing as an isolated engineering failure. I'm going outside right now to inspect my springs.

It was a listing like this, I offered them 140.00 for the springs and ship them together.

From your drawing the break was hidden above where you can see. It would be difficult to detect while the wheels are on the ground or during casual driving.

A defect like this - once the cause is identified - will warrant a manufacturer investigation and I can imagine some lawfirm smelling blood in the water. Be prepared for Camp Lejeune water lawsuit level stuff.

With Fords level of R&D and experience in truck building I wonder if this would be an indictment of the monoleaf design since I think it was unique to the US version of what was a 10 year old truck design. I'm surprised.

I was on the Ebay page where I bought the UK multi-leaf set (they are currently out of them) and they had what appeared to be monoleafs.

Very strange. I had a 1995 Ranger break a leaf spring. I ordered a new one from Amazon. Had a neighbor install it. (He was a mechanic for Manny Moe and Jack)
The new spring had 3 leaves the old 2. Yes 3 on one side 2 on the other. I think I had that truck about 3 months when I traded my 2014 Fiesta S in on my 2019 XL. My brother who worked on a used car lot sold the 95 for me, about 4 months later.

2019 Ford Ranger XL with 47,000 miles. I brought my Ranger in for an oil change this morning. As the mechanic lifted the truck, the forward leaf spring mount holes (sorry I don't know the correct term) broke on both sides and the leaf springs detached from the mounts. I could see through a large window into the service area the mechanic and service desk person looking at the mounts and they called me in right away. While my first instinct was to blame the mechanic (due to the improbability of this happening) it looked like the lift was placed correctly. I searched this forum and the Internet at large and I do not see many instances of a leaf spring failure like this and certainly not both springs failing at the same time. I never carry heavy loads, never go off-roading, and only tow my 14 foot fishing boat to a local lake about six time per year. The Ranger is kept in a garage. I am in Minnesota so I suppose winter time salt could be a factor. Is there a known issue with the leaf springs?
