Mine has 45k and it does seem to hunt for a gear when up a hill and down, but no problem shifting so far. I changed the oil once and the next change around 70k will try to drop the pan and replace the filter and oil. For extended warranty reasons will try to put OEM pan back on.

At about 28,000 it started with delayed/hard shift from first to second only when it was below 40 degrees. All last summer it was fine all the time. In late September on colder mornings it started hard/delayed shifts again and in 3rd to 4th as well. Took it to the dealer they said it needs to be either rebuilt of replaced. Took it in Nov. 11 still waiting on the warranty company to approve the work. I stupidly did not extend the Ford warranty since I had purchased the add on warranty when I bought the vehicle. When I do get it back if it even hiccups it's gone. Too bad because other than this it's been a dependable rig and it looks better than anything else on the market. I drove it to the dealer
Good luck and Thank you.

I am just shy of 23,000 miles on my 2021. So far seems fine. I do have the Ford extended warranty to 75,000 miles which runs out in 2029.

Yeah, I’m going there
This is to try to get an actual feel for the percentage of forum members who have actually had to have transmission repairs / replacements ( warranty or not) as compared to those who have never had their Ranger in for transmission related issues.
We often read that it’s only a small percentage of owners who have issues resulting in repairs or replacements. Hopefully this sheds some light on that claim. Thanks for participating
Both my wife’s 2019 and my 2021 have had transmission issues. Luckily, hers was still under warranty (just barely) and the dealership rebuilt it about 2 months ago. Symptoms were harsh downshifting from 4 to 3 when coming to a stop. 47k miles on her truck.

A week after we got hers back from the dealership, mine started acting up… Figures! Lol Symptoms are harsh/sluggish upshift from 3 to 4, not shifting at normal RPMs, staying in 9 and not upshifting to 10 at highway speeds, and occasional hard downshift from 5 to 4 when braking. My truck has just under 70k miles.

I ordered a new DPFE sensor that should arrive next week. Hopefully that solves my issues. If not, I’ll be making an appointment at the dealership to have it rebuilt or replaced. Whatever is easier and cheaper.

Talking to the guys at the dealership when we dropped her truck off, two of their techs have 5g rangers and also needed to have their transmissions rebuilt. That’s 4 ranger owners I know that have needed rebuilds… As much as I love the new rangers, the 10r80 is definitely the achilles heel of these trucks.

While 170 people is still a pretty small sample size, I find it interesting that it seems to be pretty much an 80/20 split (only 20 percent have problems) - I'm wondering if that is indeed true for a larger sample this is why Ford hasn't done more - its "good enough". We will never know unfortunately.....

I will repeat what I've said earlier - if I ever need transmission work, I won't be going to the dealer - I will be taking it to a local reputable transmission shop to be repaired. It will most likely be cheaper and I will have more confidence it was done correctly.

The 20% are owners who’ve had repairs/replacements done. The 80% are no problems owners. I debated about adding a third “ having issues but not taken in for repair “ choice. So now I’m wondering how much that 80% would drop if the third choice was included ( my gut tells me a significant drop). Even at that my opinion is that the 20 % is not a “ noisy few”.

Agreed - even with the small sample size 20% is certainly not a noisy few. It is significant - but my point was that if the real number was something like that , it might explain why Ford hasn't done more - the beancounters say that is an "acceptable" number.

I think a third option would probably muddy the waters - because "having issues" could be something as simple as "I don't like the way it shifts" (lugging, etc), even though it is having no issues. I think "having issues" is pretty subjective.

That’s pretty much why I didn’t include it

The problem is we here on the forum barely make up 6% (20,000 members) of the overall sales of the 5G Ranger which is just over 375,000 units. So it's easy to say there's not a huge problem on here when we have no idea how many other owners are having problems with theirs. Then add in all the other models that use the same 10R80 I'd bet you're closer (probably more) than 50% have had or are having problems.

I know when I got my last oil change I asked the service manager about this and he said "there's been a lot of vehicles in for service lately with these transmissions" and kind of shook his head in disgust. I could see an F150 up on the lift getting one replaced. I think it's a much bigger problem than we think and that Ford is letting people to believe. But today it's all about numbers and pleasing share holders instead of the customer!
