don't let someone else tell you what to do, live as you see fit. take the appropriate risk for you not for the rest of the world. you got two hands, brain, and a pair... make use of them. here is what we did, teaching my son to drive off road as early as possible .... Baja is magical if anyone would like to go this month I'm happy to lead. I'm well versed and know my way around. please, if you reach out expect to be out of your comfort zone with me. if that is not you then don't engage. families and pets welcome...

What area were you camping at? I've been looking for new spots
This is the Alabama Hills area. It is just outside Lone Pine. Look up Movie Road. Many movies were filmed here. There are countless Overland videos on Youtube about this place. Despite it's popularity there are still good secluded spots to be had.

I do enjoy how people read these proposed bills and immediately think "OMG THEY'RE COMING AFTER MY MONEY!!!11"

Like any of us folk here would even remotely fit in the population they're targeting for these taxes. It's as if people see "tax" and immediately lose any reading comprehension.

Raise your hand if your net worth is >$15M....
Mitch McConell thinks I'm rich. That's even more laughable. This coming from a guy with a net worth north of $20 million on an income that's less than $200K. The math doesn't add up.

Tell me about it. I'm nowhere near any of these "rich" people yet I'm still somehow rich. I know that I'm likely never going to fall into any of these buckets that target wealth taxes. Net worth of $15M? Come on now.

As for the topic at hand...

I've spent most of the lockdowns unemployed, starting in June, after moving in April. Recently managed gainful employment last month after 6.5 months of hard searching (hundreds of applications with <4% response rates), but it's a contract position, so I'm without any real benefits like PTO/sick time/holiday pay, etc. But hey, it comes with nearly unlimited OT potential!

I tried to spend a fair bit of time outside exploring local trails, places like Joshua Tree, the San Bernardino National Forest, Cleveland National Forest, etc. Mostly as far away from people as I can be, trying to stay safe for myself and my household.

That's awesome that he's learning at such a young age. He'll remember that and the bond that was created through that when he's older for sure. I want to teach my daughter how to ride motorcycles but man that can get expensive.

Like any of us folk here would even remotely fit in the population they're targeting for these taxes. It's as if people see "tax" and immediately lose any reading comprehension. (Not to mention this is after what, ~30,400 people out of the state's 39.5M population.)

That's how all taxes start....Once the realize the tax isn't raising the money projected the keep lowering the threshold to apply it. The income tax started at 1% an exempted most of the middle class.

Gov greed an desire to spend other people's money always expands taxes.

I won't get into the intricacies of the tax code, just remember back in the late-ish 1900s (70s-80s) when taxes were at "appropriate" levels across the board, higher on the highest incomes, the country was actually surviving on the income that was being brought in until we started getting massive tax cuts on them.

https://bradfordtaxinstitute.com/Free_Resources/Federal-Income-Tax-Rates.aspx
https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/statistics/historical-highest-marginal-income-tax-rates

In fact the lowest tax rates have actually gone down, significantly, from the highs in the '40s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Income_tax_in_the_United_States#Income_tax_rates_in_history

The lower classes will never ever be able to make up the deficits that a small tax on the richest people in the country could, regardless of the effective tax rates applied to them.

0.4% of $20M = $80,000.

Median income at 100% = $63,179

Perspective helps.

Sooo uhhh I'm trying to keep "politics" out of this thread as much as possible guys. Taxes are kind of the threshold for arguments no matter where you live.

Aye, understandable. But you can't expect much when you start the thread talking about a pandemic, implying it isn't serious and using the term Commiefornia.

a quick glance here will show you that once the tax rates were reduced to acceptable levels revenue to the treasury increased. The high rates you fondly remember were never paid. People did everything possible to avoid the taxes. Lowering the rates made it cheaper to pay the tax than avoid it. Revenue collected by the government doubled from 1979 to 1989

You can't use these raw numbers to support, literally, anything. More people, more businesses, etc, all contribute to more tax income, not just receipts. You need other information to make any reasonable conclusions from yearly tax revenue.

New to this thread and ill try to get it back on topic. I purchased a 2020 Ford Ranger in October 2020, and the next day ordered alot of equipment/gear to outfit it to live out of for 3 weeks while travelling through the Yukon (hopefully) this summer along with many other local planned outings in my local area of BC. My truck is a 2020 Ford Ranger FX4 6' box. I have installed Yakima roof bars and basket on the cab, 3" BDS lift/level, and Duratracs. I also have a decked system that is sitting in my garage. Because of COVID delays, I am still waiting on a Leer 100XR insulated canopy / camper shell, Prinsu topper rack, 50" curved Rigid light, and various odds and ends such as recovery gear/kitchen supplies etc. Absolutely love this truck so far and I am coming from a 2012 Toyota Tundra TRD. I love the smaller foot print of the Ranger and just the overall driving experience. It will be used as a home base away from home while spending summers mountain biking and winters ski-touring in the Kootenay mountains. Love reading this thread and have come up with even more ideas!

Dave, do they still have fresh air in California? Asking for a friend. ;)
Only if you pay the "BreatH" tax and carry a valid permit to do so. There's a fine if you do it without wearing a mask , indoors, in your own home, but if you own your home, they'll forgive the fine and double your property tax so that fill in with all the worse BS you can think of.

Good on you for trying Steve but as my friends down east say, "the arse is out of 'er now!"

It sounds like your rig will be well suited for a Yukon trip. I made a trip to Hyder, AK through BC and was tempted to keep going when I saw a sign for the Alaska-Yukon highway. Not sure why you'd leave Nelson, BC - I love that place!

Working on your build is a great way to spend time during lockdown. Enjoy!
