U-Haul knows better?

I was trying to reserve U-Haul’s auto transport to tow my ‘72 F-100 which should have a GVWR between 4500 and 5500 lbs. (it’s a bit modified so I’m not really sure what it weighs currently.) The trailer empty is 2210 lbs. Their system wouldn’t let me. I’m assuming they’re cautioning on the high side of the towed vehicle of potentially 7700 lbs. What says the hive? Would this be a horrible idea for 600 miles? 2021 SCrew 4x4 with factory tow package.

Hey Andrew - there’s a thread somewhere on the forum about this very subject. It might take a bit of searching but I think the answer is out there.

If it were across town I'd say it would be fine, but I'm not sure I'd want to tow that 600 miles.

Properly loaded you can tow that no problem. All uhaul looks at are numbers and they see you’ll be towing real close to max tow capacity. Be a big lawsuit on their hands if they let you take the trailer and something happened. They are just covering their own butts. Don’t blame em’

I mean, I guess whether we can all agree (which we won't) if the Ranger can safely do it or not, does it matter? Since I doubt you'll be able to convince U-haul, certainly not the person working behind the counter, that they should give you the trailer.
It's not like they follow you after you pick up the trailer to see what you're putting on it.

However, lying on the paperwork could make one liable if things go south.

Also, OP, perhaps they denied you because of this.

U HAUL said:
  • Must weigh at least 3,500 lbs. (curb weight), and must equal or exceed 80% of the combined weight of the trailer (2,210 lbs.) and the vehicle being towed (up to 5,290 lbs.).
Google says a '72 F-100 comes in @ 4450 lbs. Which means tow vehicle must weigh 5328 lbs to meet their standard. The heaviest Rangers are about 4500 lbs according to google.

My concern there is what specs are used for that weight? 6-cyl, bumpers, etc. It seems to me the weight could vary greatly, like you said the only way to know for sure is to weigh it. I just wanted to see what real world experience is out there.

I don't think the wait is going to be the problem but more of the size of the truck. The new Auto Transport U-Haul has doesn't really fit full-size Vehicles anymore. It's more of mid and compact.

If you're on the fence get the trailer by any means necessary, and hit some scales on the way out of town. If it's a no-go plan another way to do it.
