Was unloading my kayak last weekend when I noticed two cracks on either side of the tailgate. No damage back there from any fenderbender that I can see. Anyone else had this occur?

Haven’t. Observation. Noticed identical, at latch location. Cracks look inside out, considering no paint/exterior body damage.

Very odd.

There’s a bumper on the tailgate and a stop on the end of the bed rail. Are they in place? Are they making contact properly?

Just thought of something - do you have a tailgate seal kit installed? It might be too thick in that area or the foam density might be too high.

Friday yet?

Corporate drone. Dilbert's world is alive & well.
I keep thinking about a load on the tailgate. Like if the OP has hauled a large heavy load with the open tailgate carrying part of the weight. Could the stress at the cable support connection point cause it? Visualize the cable connection points trying to pivot due to the dynamic load thereby cracking the sheetmetal.

Not the best explanation but hopefully you get my point.

Seems like the load from hauling caused it. Maybe a Kayak? Normal ride might not do it, but maybe a harsh bump or if someone was standing on the tailgate at same time also

I would not be happy

I've a bed extender. Kayak is pretty light as far as a heavy load goes. The bed extender pretty much holds the weight anyway.

Remind me, is the tailgate steel or aluminum?

My tailgate is getting to be low, or curved in the middle with the tailgate down, i use my truck for work stuff a lot so kind of expected. All tailgates do this. So.... do you use it for work? Mall crawler? If a mall crawler, id be concerned. Work truck and you put heavy loads on it while driving,
Theybdont make em like they used to. But if a mall crawler, yeah something caused it to wreck.

Also aluminum tailgate here. It does seem like a weight issue when lowered because both sides appear to be equal.
