Unlikely to be the weight of the kayak.

I beat the hell out of this truck and often carry heavy loads on the tailgate. Including loads of wood and driving ATV's across it, stone. So much weight that I had to look up the weight limit of the tailgate to ensure I wasnt going to break it (dont ask me what it is... I have forgotten.. but can easily be found).

No cracks on mine.

Before you put the damper on, did you let it slam open much?

Have a bed liner on the tailgate, either plastic or spray-on? Does it show any signs of being abused? The only thing I can think of is a heavy load on it / previous owner kept dropping it every time they opened it / or they drove a lot with it lowered....it constantly bouncing might do that damage.

I do the same with my truck. If a bed full of 8-9ft Oak logs going down washed out dirt roads and crappy paved roads on top of the other stuff I’ve done to it hasn’t jacked mine up I’m not sure what it would take to do that. Also no damper or extra seals since it has been brought up.

That's what I'm wondering. There is a paint scrap on the top of the tailgate, but no other visible damage, but its used and that's entirely possible.
