It probably fixed *something* but not my issues.
So after familiarizing myself with the whole update process and the options available (since it's my first Ford and I purchased it not even a month ago), and I've successfully updated SYNC to 3.4 21020 using a USB stick.

I noticed that my Navigation Maps Version remains at NA119 even after checking for updates manually - is that the latest or should I be expecting a newer one?
That's the latest nav version.

Does this update remove the infuriating practice of graying out Carplay playlist access if the vehicle is moving?

I have Carplay in several other vehicles and none of them do this except Sync after the last update.

This "feature" in and of itself is almost enough for me to sell my truck because it is so frustrating.

Edit: Just completed the update and sure enough, it still grays out the recent playlist selection when moving.

More asinine Nannyware.

Some things I can understand but this just sucks.

My Kenwood, Sony, and Pioneer head units with the latest firmware don't do this BS.

Does this only happen in vehicles with Nav?

If so, can I disable the built-in Nav since I never use it?
Sounds like your other units are aftermarket and don't relay GPS or speed data to CarPlay / Android Auto. The nannying isn't isn't a feature of Sync but rather a feature of CarPlay and Android Auto. If they know your vehicle speed, then they do things to nanny you.

Sync didn't do it either until the version before this one.

Granted, the other units rely on the phone for GPS, which is why I wondered if the non-Nav units did it.

I'll have to try my phone in something newer to see if the "feature" is now standard with Carplay.

mine says it's up to date on the old version, won't pull 21020 over wifi. I'm assuming the rollout is phased, so not gonna worry about it for now.

To put it another way - CarPlay and Android Auto both run on the device that's plugged into the vehicle, and not from the vehicle itself. Your phone is "projecting" to the vehicle, as they say. The head unit has very little say in what appears on-screen as it's only acting as a monitor/display and relaying sensor data, voice, and touch back to the phone. This is why CarPlay and Android Auto require a phone to be used.

There are actually products out that exploit the way these work. CarDongle is one, which pretends to be an Android Phone running Android Auto, but instead projects a full Android Operating system to the vehicle display for you to install and run whatever you want without restriction. This only works because he head unit has no idea what's being projected - that's all done external to it.

That's the latest nav version.
Thanks for your answer.

Since posting my question, I ended up testing the app "Syn3 Updater".
Was wondering if anyone knew what was that 2.20 version they are listing?

Good question, I don't know. From what I've read 1.19 is the latest and doing a check for updates over wifi showed mine is up to date with 1.19. Now I'm curious too.

The plot thickens:

I went onto https://syncnavigation.com/ford/home, typed in my VIN and ESN, and it told me I had a map update available. So I placed the order (at no cost since it's a download), I downloaded the ZIP (12.3GB) and proceeded with the update using a USB stick. Took its sweet time. I came back to a successful update, and it was still showing on NA119 running on 3.4.21020... Not sure why it told me there was an update in the first place.

So I called the number provided in the email confirmation (https://syncnavigation.com/ford/contactus)

Questions on Map installation and/or SYNC® 3 software updates for your vehicle
Please contact the Ford CRC at (800) 392-3673

The rep confirmed that as of today, the latest map version is NA119.

So not sure what "Syn3 Updater" is referring to. Except if maybe it gets access to updates somewhere in a backend, before the Ford websites and reps even do. It's possible; I'll try all this again in a few days.

The end.

Just downloading the 3.4.21020. update took forever from the Ford Servers.

Like 13 minutes to download and I have 100Mbps internet.

Mine has been downloading most of yesterday. I didn't leave the truck running, just turned on the infotainment and navigated to the check for updates option and it would start downloading. Based on the progress bar it got as far as maybe 20%... then at some point started over... lol

After work, I left it running for about 30 mins and it didn't make any difference. I even tried using my phone as a hotspot thinking it needed a better signal but didn't help.

Your sig indicates that you have a 2019.

Did you get the map update for free?

Ford wants $40 to update my 2019, which is most certainly not going to happen.

I have a 2020, and I just checked online and it now shows an update available. It's $40 if they send me a USB stick, but free if I download, which I'm doing now.

I don't get the option to download.

The only option I'm offered is the $40 USB, labeled as the "recommended" option.
