Ok I was idling with engine running during my Map update, 2x I received a message on the screen system rebooting, and then after reboot a message was displayed to cycle ignition off and restart - (exact wording?) to continue with update.
I wish I would have snapped a pic of the message.
Note: The engine never auto shutdown, I interacted and manually performed the action.

Sync is looking for a complete power drop at those points.
So even with engine not running and using a (charger) you will still need to cycle the key.
This is my 4th map update, I recall all of them being the same - cycle

Edit: I think the wording is "Key Cycle Required"
Ok, I did not get the cycle the key message. Were you upgrading Sync or just the maps?? I was already on Sync 3.4.21388, so guessing a key cycle was not needed for just the maps. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There is essentially no difference between doing the updates with the engine running or using a charger in accessory mode, except you are not idling or driving (using fuel). If you are driving while doing the update, you don't have to disable auto stop, but if idling in the driveway or in accessory mode, you have to disable auto stop or the engine will stop or the accessory mode drops out. I have done 3 or 4 Sync and or map updates using this method. The software update prompts are the same using this method.

only map update, so it appears to be (only-if required), the only difference I guess would be I was (Idling in the garage) and it appears you were driving, all of my updates I have done have been done via USB both for (Sync & Map) - NEVER auto update or OTA and turned it off within the first month of ownership.

I guess all that matters is - you get the final - You may now remove your USB device, that was my main objective of pointing out, and to not be misled by the (update complete) message alone, as if you let it sit - it will change over to system updating again.
No matter how it gets to that point, system reboots or cycle ignition - the final message is the most important - since we cannot visually see a progress bar.

Now the message i was getting (Cycle Ignition) may be tied to (Auto Engine Off) - IPC, if I recall when selected is 30-Minutes - Not to be confused with (Remote Start or ASS settings)
When I am doing anything - that requires engine running at idle for long periods, I either select it off or just hit the button to (continue) when the message pops up on the (IPC) engine is about to shut-down.
Since modules crosstalk, the Sync update process, may be automatically popping the message up to match the (IPC-Configured) selection since I had it selected (Auto Eng Off)
If I had it selected (Off) I may not have received the Sync (Cycle Ignition) messages and only saw the automatic reboots.

IDK, as I said - the most important is the message - To Remove the USB as all of the updating process is hidden from view.

I am already impressed with the long term commitment of Sync and Android Auto software.

Have you ever wondered "How long will it last?" Will it still all work when my truck is 15 years old?

I have a 2018 Google Pixel 3 cell phone and Sync is latest. I can't believe that it all still works flawlessly. How long will this last? Granted, it is time for me to get a new cell phone :)

Unless you you have worked in software development I don't think you can appreciated the long term commitments of interoperability that is involved here.
