Finally a Ford TSB to Try and Fix our Transmission Problems (TSB 24-2046)

1) Has anyone regretted having the TSB done, if it wasn't mandatory for you due to tranny failure?
2) Just to understand what folks consider "harsh" shifting: during a hard acceleration, I sometimes have what seems like a hesitation/stutter and then large jarring jolt as the tranny shifts, where I feel like it might break a gear or similar. But it's not all the time I accelerate. Is this considered normal for the ranger?

I was recently just bragging on my 60k 2019 on how smooth it’s been running but, delayed shifts is something it’s always had, especially drive to reverse.

I almost hate to mess with it, or rather have a dealer mess with it.

Just wanted to comment on the customer service of my local dealers as I’m trying to move through this process.
Closest one two me set an appointment for mid June. Called back the next day and pushed it till end of July.
Called the second closest dealer to me and he told me no. No appointments will be scheduled.
Third dealer, (about and hour and 15 minute drive one way) gets me in within two weeks.
Crazy that a known warrantee issue could leave someone without a vehicle for 4 months to even get looked at.
Makes me realize why people pay the extra money for Toyota where these issues don’t exist.

Another one bites the dust. My 2019 is coming up on 85k and over the last few weeks started flaring 3-4 (had only been doing intermittent in cold start) and now rough shifting 1-2, 1-3, and 6-4. Dealer called this afternoon, reflash didn't work. Rebuild or replace recommended, both at absolutely absurd prices.

You know Ford is selling these transmissions fast, cause a Ford reman vs new unit only saves you like $300 bucks (new RWD unit is $5k at cheapest dealer in state).

Missing my old Frontier today.

Mine is in the shop currently waiting on parts or a new transmission. I'm currently shopping around at what's left of the manual options and it's looking pretty bad.

Jeep Wrongler, Ford Brunco, ToyYoda Tacoma all have a manual option but with some serious caveats.

If you take it in for the TSB and they reflash it, does that overwrite your tune?

Update: about 700 miles since the TSB update. Software only. It's noticeably better. Was never horrible, but slammed some hard downshifts while going downhill at neutral throttle. I think it was better right after the TSB than it is now, but I'm not sure. It's definitely smoother on downshifts and quicker to select a gear when turning a corner and starting up a steep hill.

I have a ‘22 XLT 4x4 with ~20k on it. I get the lurching when it’s cold and some other weirdness from time to time.

I have a couple of questions…

How do I get the dealer to do the work?

I installed a Tom Wood’s driveshaft last Fall. Can/will the dealer use that as an excuse to not perform the TSB? Would it be worth it to reinstall the OEM driveshaft before I take it to the dealer?

I have a 22 Tremor with 16K on it. Here’s what I have done.
Was having quirky shifts. Called dealer to set appointment to have it looked at. I didn’t have to mention the TSB. They did the first phase of the TSB ( software flash). They told me that they did what the TSB directed them to do and if I continued to have problems then bring it back in. Was ok for a week then had issues again. Called and set second appointment to have it looked at. Second appointment they did the valve body inspection/clean. That didn’t help so they replaced the valve body assembly. They said no issues on test drive after repair. I haven’t driven it yet seeing we’re out of state till the first week of April.
My opinion on the driveshaft would be to put the oem back in before you initiate any complaint with them. Again you shouldn’t have to mention the TSB initially, just your complaint. If they balk then bring up the TSB.

If you take it in for the TSB and they reflash it, does that overwrite your tune?

You need to un-install the tune before you take it in. I suspect they couldn't re-flash if there was one and if it was forced over a tune esp one that already disabled ASS or adaptive learning it would cause havoc. I presume the programming updates tables for the valve body and would have to be repeated if the dealer ends up replacing it.

I would be careful using terms like "really common problem" and "all of our rangers". Those are very absolute statements. This forum and others represent a small percentage of the vehicles out there. And, not even everyone on this forum has had issues. Is it an issue, yes. Is it a 100% for sure that yours or anyone's transmission is going to fail, NO.

For those that have had or have issues, it is a big issue. Those people also are the ones who go on forums and other on-line venues and make a lot of noise abcouout their problems.

My late year 2019, which put it in the prime time frame for the CDF drum issue, drives and shifts just fine, with 33K on it. Does the possibility concern me? I'd be foolish to say no. Am I loosing sleep at night, NO! I am taking precautions, like changing the pan and doing regular drain and fills. I installed the Fitzstik dip stick so I can monitor the level and fluid quality.

Is the 10R80 perfect, no. Name another one that is. With anything as complicated as our transmissions and trucks there is going to be issues.

Just be careful when you use absolutes in your sentences as it shows your emotions coming through.

Mine is getting a new Valve body at 43 000km's (26 000 miles). Reported to the dealer that I was having issues with 4th gear, they pulled the code and did a quick drive and ordered the part.

Service rep was telling me they were seing a lot of transmissions problems with Ranger that tow or offroad and that's almost half of my millage.
