Draining oil without replacing filter

Just an FYI - you don't have to remove the tire to get to the oil filter. All you have to do is turn the wheel to the right and you can access the filter just fine.

I have never turned my tire on mine. It is a 4wd. There was a lot of hoopla about how difficult this was. Honestly not too bad. I have done at least 15 so far.

I agree - of all the vehicles I've changed oil on, this ranks towards the top for ease or changing the oil and filter. Certainly not the easiest, but definitely nowhere near the hardest. You can get to the filter without turning the tire but it makes it a lot easier, IMO. I've never understood all the hate for where the filter is.

Honestly, the hardest part of the job is removing the skid plate - and that isn't that hard (4 bolts). It is easier than removing the fiber "aerodynamic covering" (I have no idea what it is called) that I have to do under our C-Max - I hate those things.

Its been a LONG time since Fram filters were good!

The only thing that makes a mess charging the filter is taking it off without letting it drain. I just break it loose, give a little turn, let it drain in to drain pan, stops draining remove, never had a mess. Always clean up with brake clean.

Install a femco valve and a drain with a hose. No need to pull skid plate easy peasy. Others use I think it's valvomax, I used femco on all of my vehicles.

I would change the filter along with the oil. I wouldn't worry about filter sealing. As everyone suggests...turn the wheel full right for clearance...remove the splash shield for access...get a fairly large drain pan to catch what that "drip channel" misses and just remove it. Make sure the gasket didn't stay on the block...lube up the sealing surface with a little engine oil, and run the filter up to the block....and then another 1 turn to seal it. I do all the oil changes on mine, and at 75k..heve never had a problem.

Not sure what model truck you have or if any skid plates. I got the ValvoMax thinking it would be more secure than the Fumoto valve. With Shrockworks skid plates it is nearly impossible to attach the drain hose. I will need to cut a hole in plate or go with Fumoto valve.

With the stock skid plate and the ValvoMax you can do it with the skid plate on - food for thought.

I have the RCI skids and the ValvoMax works great with them.
