Ok everybody.

Finally got a real number from local dealer.
5800 for rebuild out the door.

It's not horrible. Local shop was just a couple hundred under that and I'd rather have the work documented by the dealer so when it dies again they already have the history... lol

Ill be swapping the pan for one with a drain at the next fluid change. Then I'll personally keep on top of the fluid changes.
That isn't terrible - its crazy how we've seen quotes for replace from the 5k vicinity to over 11k. That is just nuts. I still say if mine goes south I'm taking it to a local reputable transmission place rather than the dealer.

The 11k quote was for a full new unit.
The original rebuild quote was close to 6500 iirc. I bitched and told them I needed ford to step up and stand behind their product.

Also bring up the fact that the 1st time the manual mentions a trans fluid change is 150k.

Its a typo, trans is disposable and needs to be replaced at 150k. If it doesn’t grenade sooner.

I have 88k and the trans acts like it did first day off the lot with all the issues. I got the first one off the lot 2/2019 and never got the ecm flashed with the updated programming or changed the fluid. Ill replace it when it fails. Till then ill keep on truckin. Only thing failing at this point is the drive shaft, the idler bearing makes noise which is a known issue. Ill let you know when that implodes.

UPDATE 10/2025: Just crossed 100k and still truckin as before!

This is a double edged sword. Yes, they are required to prove it but they also have a legal team on staff who will make your life unbearable. They won't roll over because you said so. They will fight the legal battle and deny it until you give up. What are you more likely to do? Spend $8,000 on a transmission or $50,000 on a lawsuit.
That sword cuts both ways, all you really need to do is pay an attorney a hundred bucks to draft you a letter declaring intent to sue the dealership for breach of contract (the warranty) and cite all that magnusson voss whatever in it and then they're looking at the same equation: do we want to spend 10k 20k on attorneys fees when we can probably get Ford corporate to pay for this trans and call it customer care and we're out zero dollars?

Just make them believe you're going to be an expensive pain in the ass that's going to be MORE expensive than fixing the problem and the choice becomes easy for anyone

Tell them, calmly, if they make you drag them.into court you're going to call the local news stations and see if they want to do a story about it, you're going to post about it online, you're going to put the story on their Instagram and Yelp and Google reviews pages and before they ever threaten you with libel that only applies to things that aren't true, you're just going to relay the facts for the public to decide

You'll be the squeakiest wheel they've ever seen in their lives or they could fix your truck, within reason.

With it being out of warranty go to a reputable transmission shop and have them handle it. You can count on it being cheaper. You said they told you 100k on warranty that is news I thought powertrain warranty was 5 years and 60k miles. Did you have extended warranty?
I found this on FORD site:
Warranty Coverage Periods
The list below provides a summary of warranty coverage provided by Ford Motor Company. Warranty expiration is based on time or mileage, whichever occurs first. Coverage begins on your Warranty Start Date, also known as the in-service date.

  • New Vehicle Limited Warranty: 3 years/36,000 miles
  • Powertrain Warranty: 5 years/60,000 miles
  • Power Stroke® Diesel Warranty: 5 years/100,000 miles
  • Corrosion Warranty: 5 years regardless of mileage
  • Safety Restraint Warranty (safety belts and airbag supplemental restraint system): 5 years/60,000 miles
  • Emissions Warranty: Coverage varies by vehicle
  • Hybrid/Electric Unique Components: 8 years/100,000 miles

Its not the dealer making the call on warranty, so... you won't be suing (or threatening to sue) the dealer. You're threatening Ford and they have a team of lawyers on staff. I'm not saying its right, but Magnusson Moss isn't the coverall solution to getting what you want. It depends on how hard Mother Ford is willing to fight you.

IMO, that's generally far from reality. The moment you mention lawyers you're no longer going to be talking to some dealership service advisor, you're referred to legal and the conversation is done.

You're already done, what's the difference? Pay $11k and kiss their ass or figure something else out. This is something else.

Y'all claim to "know how it goes" like you've done this before, have you been to court? Ever sued anybody? Hell if you're divorced you should understand what I'm getting at, nobody wins but the lawyers in a courthouse. You just have to show them you're willing to drag them in there... whoever "them" is

It's far cheaper to fix the damn truck for all involved regardless of who wins

Well, officially got the truck back last night.
5800 flat out the door. Didnt try to nickle and dime at the end, which was nice.

Truck feels great. Shifting is nice and crisp in "sport" and soft in standard dive mode. Havent done any spirited driving yet but even my Average mpg is back to nearly 23, up from the dismal 16-17 it was getting with the trans issues, even with the bigger tires I have. (I'll edit with size if anyone is interested)

Overall, glad the process is done.

Good to hear, sucks it died but you're on the lower end cost wise.

Now, keep up the maintenance.
