I have a 2020 Ford Ranger XLT 4 wheel drive 28,000 mi. I noticed the backing plate had oil all over on the right rear of the outside of the brake backing plate housing. Ford said I had to get a whole new axle put in with the seal, why it is that way, I don't know. I took it to a second Ford dealer he told me the same thing they only come as a kit. They fix it under warranty they were good about that cuz I'm outside of the 3-year. Is anyone else ever had a problem like this or my truck just built on a Monday.

My father in law’s 2023 leaked with just 6k on the odometer. His local dealer replaced the whole axle assembly.

I am guessing replacing only the seal is insufficient. There is probably something abnormal with the axle causing excessing seal wear, hence axle replacement. BTW axel is a figure skating move.

So to put it simple it is most likely covered under the 5 year 60,000 mile powertrain warranty. Why was it designed this way? Most likely because Ford had another "Better" idea. That said if the axle or bearing are the cause then it's a good idea to replace it anyway

Geeze, back in the day we used to press these on and off at a "mom and pop" auto parts store. I guess that's no longer a thing? Well that and the seal for a Ford 9" was lightly pressed into the housing and not on the axle shaft itself.

Thats like the old toyota axles! They were a pita to do bearing and seals, presses, rigs special presses and all. Easy if you made the proper jerry rigging tools.

Okay thanks guys for the quick response, now I understand why they replaced the whole thing. Although it looks like kind of a strange procedure. Anyways the Ford dealer in central Florida was nice enough to replace the whole thing under the five years 60,000 mile power train. He gave me a brand new Ford Edge for 5 days with no charge, way above and beyond the call of duty.

IMO, just wipe it occasionally and forget about it

I went through the hoopla at the dealer with my brand new ranger in 2019. Same issue. They "tightened" it. No difference

Other than it's a bit annoying, no issues. I tow or off road about once a month and just recently changed the rear diff fluid at 40k. Was still clean and had plenty. The leak appears worse than it is when all the dirt attaches to it

Two words of advice... Extended warranty. My 2019's first diff lasted 33k. I immediately purchased an extended warranty. Good thing, that new only lasted 23k. This time it was a seal leak and they replaced everything.

SMA did the seals on a Jeep which uses (As I recall) a very similar axle to ours.

Looks like a total pain in the ass for a home gamer.

…and if they replace both sides it’s a double axel.
