you can see how they won't want a Ranger when they are shooting for 10 minute changes.
It takes them 10 minutes to go through the game of twenty questions at check-in and another ten to try to convince you that you need a coolant flush, engine flush, tranny flush, or any other of their many add-ons. That’s where their bigger margins are. They remind me of the carpet shampoo guys. ?

I also had an experience. I called Ford and set up a first service. I have all these points and they're all going to waste if I don't use them right? And I keep getting this reminder about a recall.
So I arrive there and brought 4 tires I needed mounted and balance. I asked if the points would cover this.
The service advisor said yes it will. Cool. And they gave me a rental.
The young tech came up to the service drive to meet me. I tried to bond with them telling them I used to work at a dealer but since retired and have no access to equipment.

I think that was my mistake!! I picked up the truck later in the day, the oil reminder light still on, and the tires shook my fillings out on the ride home. Not a single factory wheel weight was touched!
Probably thinking "he's a tech, he can do the rest himself." Oil and tires looked good though.
Good grief. What a world.

I live just south from you near Boston. I invested in a set of drive up ramps years ago. Take her for a warmup spin and up the ramps she goes. Get the trusty plastic pan out and get er done. 20 minutes max with being on my back on a creeper for all of 4 minutes tops. Also picked up a 1/2 socket end cap for getting filter off and on. Easy peasy with wix filters and mobile 1 oil.

You don't think they were perhaps thinking since you worked at a dealer you knew what kind of shoddy service to expect. What is good for the goose........

If we all were in your town one day we could have 30-40 Rangers pull into the shop and see if they turned all of our business way.

I think what you experienced is sometimes referred to as a paradoxical outcome. When I moved to Pittsburgh I had to get my Saab inspected (no annual inspections in CO) and as it so happened the husband of the lady who did daycare for our kids owned a service station, so I took it to him assuming he might be "reasonable" Well this dude flunked it for tires, brakes, tint on the windows (legit) and a small hole in the exhaust, the brakes and tires though actually were legal. So went to another station having patched the dime size hole and removed the tint, but this shop flunked it soley because "no patching of the exhaust allowed" . Ok tried yet another shop where they call me at work and say everything looks good except your windshield wipers are worn - I've about had it with this bs and authorize them to replace the wipers - Saab used a non standard wiper, so later that day they called and said we shopped all over couldn't find wipers so we passed it. Next day at work I start ranting about the PA inspection and noticed people with puzzled looks on their faces and one finally says - your lucky that (inspection) is no longer a twice a year event - that's when we really got fleeced.

I took my Ranger to the dealer where I bought it yesterday for the 1st oil change -- they changed the oil and filter, rotated and balanced all 4 tires, changed the wiper blades, and washed it. 1 hr and 5 min total... Oh, and when I got ready to leave, the agent told me that I had purchased an increased maintenance plan, and my oil changes should be 7,500 miles, not 10,000... (which I was going to change to anyway)..

It took them over an hour to change the oil on a Ranger?

Sounds like they are in the wrong business. I don't like saying this, but seems like a combination of stupid and lazy.
They probably spent most of their time looking for the oil filter.

That's what I used them for with my F 150. Only problem is depending on where in ME he is there might not be a dealer for quite a ways. It's really spread out there once you get out of the larger cities.

Consider yourself lucky that they didn't work on it.

I do my own changes. Hardest part is going underneath to drain the oil cause I'm a fatty.

The oil filter is easy to get to through the drivers side wheel well.

Costs me $30 bucks total for oem filter and motorcraft oil from walmart.

They probably spent most of their time looking for the oil filter.
Or maybe drained the tranny fluid and put an additional 6qts of oil in the oil pan?

I changed my own oil at 1000 miles and again at 5000 miles. The 4000 mile interval was too long. The oil was very dirty and it is thin stuff to begin with. I'll probably go back to 3000 mile intervals, like in the olden days. Be sure to use a 15 mm wrench and not a 12 point socket to remove the oil plug. Dealership did that on my Explorer and rounded the corners off. Ford makes those slightly undersized to prevent idiots from over-tightening and ruining the threads; probably because they are dissimilar materials. I also replaced the Phillips-head retention clips over the oil filter flap with some press-in types. It makes access much easier. However, no matter how many time I do this, I'm going to spill some oil on the driveway.

I really would rather take it to the dealer, but when I took my explorer there, I gave them two bottles of full-synthetic and asked them to use that, and they didn't. :explode:
