If I replace something myself, I write the date and/or mileage on it. IE: The dry performance air filter came with sticker, and the cabin filter has my sharpie clearly on the visible side showing date/mileage of replacement.
this is a good idea I will start doing this as well

Dealers sux... There I said it.
not all of them. The Quick Lane where I take my vehicles are top notch. But they know that I am a car guy and will Likely know if they try to bullshit me so they just don’t do it. Also the fact that I have been going there almost 20 years doesn’t hurt either.

I have also been known to take a pen and number the tires 1-4 such that you can't tell unless you looked for it. That way I can tell that they actually rotated my tires.

Im not as obvious with the pen, but i do look for greasy mechanic hand prints on my wheels still covered in brake dust.

My dealer told me that 4 of my lug nuts were bad. I told them thank you for bringing it up since they are ONLY ones to ever touch my rims or tires. They conveniently found a new package of lug nuts to use in the shop at no charge. I will not deal with crooks! Never going back.

Brake dust can be very useful in that situation. A little ball-point pen mark in the same spot on each tire is totally unnoticeable unless you look for it.

I've started writing the "Install Date" on my Air and Cabin Air Filters when I replace them. One month after I replaced my cabin air filter, the Quick Lane Technician showed me "My" Filter. Funny - No date on it. My guess is that they keep some old filters laying around and use them to show the customer how dirty the filter is. When I called them on it, their "excuse" was that service records did not indicate I had ever changed my filters so they were just showing me what my filter would look like if they took it out. I just shook my head and told them "I'm a lot smarter than you give me credit for . . . nice try".

I'm lucky - my Quick Lane has windows into the service bay, so I watch my Ranger like a hawk. I even make sure they change the oil filter, as that would be easy to purposely miss and still charge me.

What you described is fraud. You went there based on the idea they are the experts and know better than you, but in reality they lied about the filter to squeeze your wallet. I'd scorch them in Google reviews.

I did my first oil change at one and they only hand tightened the oil drain plug and it leaked on my driveway. I'm lucky I caught it fast enough to not damage the engine.
