Yep! Ask about oil and every one is a closet oil freak.Oil threads are the best, like watching a heard of cats being released in a labyrinth cat nip.
I prefer the term "seasoned" or "experienced." ?You must be an older guy... or have been hanging with older guys.
Thankfully those of us are planning to trade in a couple years don't have to worry about what oil or filter to use. I change my oil once a year. Since I only have 4000 miles after a year, it's pretty much Overkill. I don't need an engines that last 100k miles. Let the next owner worry about changing every 5000 miles. I decided to go by the book. If I were going to keep this truck I'd be a lot more interested and what's going on inside the engine and I would send a sample. But in two years I won't even have 16000 miles on the truck and I'm definitely going to trade it on another one, the redesigned Tacoma, or the Ridgeline. I'm not loyal to any brand except for my wife. She been driving C RVs for 10 years never had a hiccup. Hondas are made pretty well but even then I lease her a new one every three years. I don't worry about oil changes on that either. I go strictly by the vehicle oil use indicator.Yep! Ask about oil and every one is a closet oil freak.
Ask about antifreeze and its like crickets and a zombie thread until three years later when some NASA Rocket Scientist resurrects it and posts about the shear strength of Glycol and how it resists foaming in a rotary pump but breaks down in a piston driven pump. And then he fades into the mist never to be heard from again while every one scratches their head wondering if any of that will actually be useful.
You're a youngster....I prefer the term "seasoned" or "experienced." ?

My Ranger computer just reminded me to change my oil in the next 100 miles . I’m at 3,900 miles! That 10,000 mile interval is bsThis is a good point - Quite a while ago, I saw advice that said that if your vehicle had a computer with oil change reminders the best way to gauge when to change oil was to use the computer. It knows the operating parameters of the engine, and should tell you when you need to change the oil based on those.
Our C-Max has that and that is when I know to change the oil. I'm assuming the Ranger has a similar function. Seems most cars these days have this built in.
Oils and engines have come a LONG ways since the days of "every 3000 miles".
I don’t really trust the system either. If it can tell us what the actual viscosity and break down is then what’s the point of an oïl analysis .My Ranger computer just reminded me to change my oil in the next 100 miles . I’m at 3,900 miles! That 10,000 mile interval is bs
Yeah my truck sat at Ford for 2 months and then 2 month later it went back again and sat for 2 months. Truck was in 2 accidents and had to wait for parts. It’s a yr old this month. Still going to take it in. There’s a few other issues too. Like when shifting into reverse it makes a clunking sound sometimesI don’t really trust the system either. My buddy goes 30,000km on his Duramax between oil changes and has it tested. Oil comes back fine with normal wear readings.. So I would say the oil reader on the trucks would be bs as well. Because one did x amount of hard driving for x amount of hours doesn’t necessarily mean your oil is done. Especially if your using quality oil.

I guess it depends on your perspective of "young". I've owned my first car for 38 years now (my 1973 Capri). Most days I don't feel too young.Oils and engines have come a LONG ways since the days of "every 3000 miles".
Rob, you must be a somewhat young fellow.
In my “younger day“ the Cardinal Rule was every 2000 miles![]()
Phil,Hi Folks,
On my oil change today, I used a Motorcraft FL910S (gotta use a Ford part) and Kirkland Pure Synthetic 5W-30. I trust the Kirkland brand. Excellent price for a full Synthetic and Costco stands behind their products.

Hi CO2,Phil,
Anything to report on the Kirkland oil? I saw that the Warren synthetic (same manufacturer) meets the spec for our trucks so I'll be trying that once I run out of my current supply.
