In my first 800 miles I done both 16 up to 23.5. Average is 19.9 overall.
I get 17-18 city, 20-23 highway...albeit I'm leveled and running 285/70-17 AT...I expected to get a hit with those mods...I'm hovering around 17k miles...

I was going to experiment with a tank running only sport mode, however I bailed on that. While it is REALLY fun, I took a 3-5 MPG hit when running it full time. I didn't feel like I was driving it any harder, but it absolutely gave me a pretty significant MPG hit. So, I went back to D. It REALLY holds the RPMs a lot higher than D. It would be kind of nice to have a compromise between the two. I guess I'd need a tune to do that.

I have the same issues with driving in S all the time, holds an uncomfortably high RPM when in traffic. But it is nice when you have to zip around slow pokes

To me, it feels like the turbo lag is gone in Sport mode.

Regular Drive mode has a pretty long lag when you punch it...but when it kicks in...BOOM!
Love that sport mode!

I don't think that's as much turbo lag as it is the transmission taking too long to down shift. You can see it yourself by clicking "+" while in "D" and while cruising at say 40 MPH or so, floor it and watch the transmission current gear indicator. For me, it takes roughly 1-1.5 seconds before it finally drops from 8th or 9th gear down to 3rd or 4th and the power kicks up. Once it does downshift though, it's almost an instantaneous power increase. However, do the same test in "S" and there's no hesitation at all...but it's also not in 8th or 9th gear at 40 MPH either.

well shit...it must be cuz i'm running 91.
i can barely chirp the tires in D, but in S, I can roast them right off the rims. So much for traction control

I better start using 87.
HAHAHA

91 and Turn that Traction Control off.

ROAST away.

S mode is a game changer sometimes when I am D it goes into too high of a gear especially if you're in hilly terrain. S mode also down shifts much better.

Funny. All the talk about "S" mode and the higher RPM and ridiculous power but no one talks about the downshifting advantages.

You are 100% right about downshifting as well. Just let your foot off the gas and wait a second. It downshifts like a pro, rarely need to apply the brakes. S mode completely transforms the Ranger into a racer.

Seriously.
