Yes, I mentioned the wrong tuner.....it was 5-Star, not Unleashed.....
Sorry to all of you Unleashed folks out there.....no bad vibes intended...

Doug, as far as stability.....I have no personal info on the Unleashed tuning. I guess they do customer requested tweaks to their tune/tunes. I have had the Livernois hottest tune (91-93 Octane Hard Shift Performance tune) installed in my Ranger for 60K+ with absolutely no issues....not a single hiccup or anything negative. We have had 1 revision that I know of and it didn't change anything I could notice. I consider their product very safe! I have changed my driving habits a bit with the Ranger but I can tell you I have been very hard on the truck in terms of pushing the performance. I swear she runs as good or better than day 1.....Love my truck and couldn't imagine driving it without the tune I have installed......how's that....lol.

btw...I have flashed my ECU many times back and forth from stock to performance with no problems....
So, with no empirical evidence you believe the Livernois tune is more stable than the Unleashed tune just because that's the one you bought and you've had no problems with it?

That seems logical.

Aren't you a scientist?

I've owned multiple tuned vehicles in the past. The fact that Torrie will tweak his tunes for the vehicle/owner is definitely a plus. Not sure why you THINK of it as a negative. A "canned" tune will NEVER be as safe as one customized to the vehicle.

I thought the tweaks to the tune from unleased was more to get the shifting to the customers liking. I went with Livernois an I'm very happy with my tunes. I ran the 91-93 performance tune until the price of gas shot up. Now I run the 87-89 tune an use plus most of the time. I liked the shifting feel better with the high octane tune, I didn't expect it to change.

Any reputable tuner like Unleashed won't make mods to your tune without you first providing data logs of what the engine is doing.
How do you provide data logs? I hope this isn't a stupid question. I have never can tuned or custom tuned a vehicle before. If providing the data logs is a difficult or expensive process, that would make a impact on my decision.

For the Livernois tune I connected the MyCal tuner to the OBD port. Then on the touch screen you touch upload and that'll load all your logs, usually in about 20 minutes. Once done you just go to your computer and send them to the tuner. With Livernois there's a program you download and it uploads to that. You'll receive your tune (s) the same way and just reverse the process which is very easy.

Got it. So what makes the Livernois and Unleashed drastically different then? If you are sending both companies logs for them to add their tune onto?

Just the way they tweak (shift points, etc...) their tunes. They're both great companies and you can't go wrong with either one. With Livernois you have to have a PC (not Mac compatible) which I had to use a friends and Unleashed IIRC is cloud based so you can use any computer.

Livernois was running a sale when I got mine, 5 tunes for $500 so that was why I went with them at the time. Plus they have great phone support and I like being able to talk to someone in case you have an issue, Unleashed is only email. I'm happy with mine and really never change tunes so unless you're towing or changing tunes often getting 5 is nice but not really necessary.

Livernois asks for logs if there's a problem or if you add significant mods that warrant a change. Otherwise, you'd never need to send logs to them. Livernois gives you up to 5 (now 6) tunes from the start and you just test each and see what suits your style.
Unleashed sounds like they focus on helping you get the one tune that works for you and are a bit more hands-on in the process.
I run Livernois but wouldn't hesitate to get a tune from Torrie at Unleashed based on interaction with him and people's reviews here.

Empirical Evidence....lol
Hang on a minute there brother.....I never said Livernois was more stable than anything or offered any data other than my opinion (not worth much). What I said was the tuning from Livernois has been VERY stable for ME! I have absolutely NO IDEA about anything with an Unleashed tune except all the chatter on here about tweaks to tunes and error codes and whatever else the folks that run those tunes experience. To be completely honest with you....I could give a rats arse what anybody thinks about Livernois tunes or Unleashed tunes or any other modification results on this forum. I know what I know about MY Ranger and it's all good.....

I completely disagree with what you said about canned tunes.....can't understand why the tune needs to be tweaked to "the vehicle"...do you have a different vehicle than I do? I could see if you have other modifications....but just a CAI and an exhaust shouldn't need any tweaking......
Can't see how continually "tweaking" the tune is good for anything....why not get it right and leave it alone.....so you keep tweaking till you break it???

ANYTIME any of the Denver Unleashed crowd wants to meet up and settle this tune disagreement......no problem. I've still got my Goodyear street tires on my stock wheels in the garage and I can change them out in 30 minutes, plus Bandimere is just a 20 minute ride.....

I just went to both Livernois and Unleased websites. If I am reading correctly, Livernois is one price, $599 which I believe is for 6 tunes. Unleashed has options for 1, 2 or 3 tunes starting at $249., and you have to buy the device separately. It looks like the programmer is $499. Or am I looking at the wrong device?

That sounds right. You need a device to upload/download and store the tunes on. They both use different devices. If you have one from a previous tune and it's compatible with Unleashed you can use it there.

Looks like Livernois has a leg up on total cost.

Cost yes but don't rule out Unleashed. Torrie is a great tuner and from everything I've read on here he really takes care if you if/when you want changes done. Doc @Doc was the test Ranger to initially design the tune for the new Ranger.

Livernois too has great customer service and they have great phone support. That was important for me being my first tune I wanted to be able to talk with someone if I ran into problems. I never did and it's a really easy process so knowing what I know now I wouldn't worry so much about having phone support. Plus everyone says Torrie gets back to you quickly when you email him.

The tweaks are to make sure things are safe, that you get the most power for your application and mods, and to respond to any changes you want or have made to the truck (shifting is just one of the many things). Recently I got revisions for my new intercooler. Most folks say that the IC is just there to reduce heat soak and there is not much to gain. Maybe with a canned or stock tune, but with proper datalogs more can be had and I saw noticeable gains.

Heck the man will get back to you at midnight on a weekend! I don't think he ever sleeps. Although tweaks are included in his package, I often send him money just because he goes out of his way to helps so darned much. Its pretty impressive.

I already had an SCT BDX that I used when I had the 5-Star tunes, so I was able to go to Unleashed and not have to buy a new device as he supports the BDX.
