Fuel in oil

Had my truck just over 5 months. 8500 miles. Knock wood, no growing oil level to date. My truck rarely, very rarely, has to make a trip so short that it doesn't fully warm the engine. And because of this forum I am very aware when those rare trips occur. But no issues so far.

As some have mentioned previously in this thread, checking the oil in this thing is... unique. I've just decided that I will only check it when it is cold. First thing on the morning, with a cup of coffee. Easy/normal process as long as the engine is cold. If it's been running? Don't even think about it.

The only thing that bothers me is the Ranger is the thirteenth new vehicle I have purchased in my lifetime and the first with any kind of oil contamination problem. Exact same driving conditions. Seems like manufacturers are designing components for failure and buyers accept that as part of the new vehicle experience then buy a warranty. With advancements in technology and manufacturing it should be easy to eliminate this issue for all. Pretty much the same with everything I buy that is made in the US lately.

Just a small update. Taking a short road trip this weekend and since I was cleaning windshield and filling washer fluid I figured I’d check the oil. It’s slightly above maximum, not as bad in winter, but is definitely still overfull and the moment I went to wipe the dipstick I could smell the gas. I folllowed the recommended oil checking procedure in the manual before someone asks. At this point I just shook my head and closed the hood. I believe the fuel does not burn off like some had said here, or if it does, it is constantly leaking in. Ford is gonna have a hell of a repair bill eventually, especially since they are calling it normal.
On the bright side the Bosch envisions I installed this past December are doing awesome still! Also I forgot how easy the air filter is to check, only one hose clamp and three levers, not 6 or 7 screws like my old focus! What a love hate relationship.

Think of it this way...
Gasoline is an organic solvent, so if it does mix with the oil, the oil will lubricate and the gasoline will keep the engine internals sparkling clean.
The fact that it's a solvent for oil is irrelevent...it still will keep your engine clean...

That’s one way to think positively. I prefer if I just filled it up with gas instead, it’s cheaper!

If you could just invent a way to return the gas to the tank you would not have to buy as much gas. ?

Sport Mode has eliminated my fuel in oil problem , and transmission problems , sounds crazy but its true , oil level hasn't increased any this time and has NO FUEL SMELL !!! , which it always had before (once it smelled like weed , but that was my bad )

I actually did try sport mode for a month straight. I didn’t experience any of the benefits regarding the transmission or oil, but my only other long term experience is the focus dct, and anything is better than that. It was nice for in the city but on the highway my mpg tanked to 17-19.

Looks like he was last online in 2021. My bet is he sold the ranger then. His solution may be in here but it may be easier to go to his profile and look at the posts he’s made.

Pull the dipstick clear with it pointing downward. if it appears hard to read then read the opposite side, it will often show better. only check the oil when cold and sitting on a level surface.

Common reasons for excess fuel in the oil that do not point to a defect.
1] Too many short trips of under 3-4 miles.
2] Failure to wait a few seconds after a cold start to engage the trans.
3] (most important) absolutely no hard acceleration until until the temperature gauge has at least moved up half way to warm, better fully warm.
These engines are designed to have a lot of ring clearance when cold and the fuel management likely runs rich prior to warm up (that's a double whammy)


Now for pure speculation or musing...
One thing I wonder about is this so called learning system for the Transmission
We often tow long distances with our Ranger and it seems to have a learning curve when we get back to local driving and short trips without the trailer. Could Forescan help that issue?
It could even affect throttle control and the fuel issue. Maybe even multiple drivers could cause minor issues.

This is most likely my final oil analysis before my warranty expires. According to the Blackstone report, my oil dilution issue is at 2.3%, which is the best it has tested since my second oil change at 12k miles. The other good news is the oil analysis isn't showing signs of wear as evidence of the lack of elements in the oil.

Just to be safe, I will be purchasing an extended warranty before I reach 60k miles.

Don't forget...draining the old oil will be heck of lot faster...too bad the 2.3 isn't a diesel...then you could just pour the old oil right back into the gas tank...
