When the outside temperature is in the 30's to low 40's, First drive of the day after sitting all night I
get a delayed hard shift when it's going into second gear. Am I on the long tortuous road to a transmission failure? Only when it's cold outside. Haven't noticed when it warms up a bit. Maybe needs fluid? I haven't noticed any leaking

Its fairly normal to have a rough shift after a cold start when it's cold outside. The tranmission wants to skip second because of programing and seems to struggle.

When it's close to freezing I let the truck warm up till rpms drop. Then I make sure to take it nice and easy down the road till it goes through the first few gears.

I wouldnt worry about your transmission at all.

How many miles on your truck? I still get occasional rough first shift, but it is much better after a fluid flush and adding LubeGard. I am coming up on 65k.

Mine has done that from day 1. It appears to be that the transmission doesn't like cold fluid. I always start mine a bit early and am easy on the throttle for a bit until it warms up.

Took my Ranger out today after a week sitting. It drove and shifted like new for 40+ miles. Almost 26K miles on it now, and 8K since I began fluid changes. The last change resulted in a 92+% of new fluid with LubeGard Platinum. New PPE deep pan and filter installed this last pass. My transmission nightmare appears to be over. Shifts up and down were smooth. Even when starting and immediately driving cold.

Change your transmission fluid early and frequent. Once symptoms settle down, monitor and at the first signs of errant behavior change the fluid again.

Now that things have settled down I plan to change it again at 50K. Sooner if it begans acting up.

One other tip:
Give your transmission time to adjust to the new fluid and how it affects the speed of the shift solenoids activating. Mine were slower and sticking. The new fluid and LubeGard Platinum smoothed out and speeded up the shift action of the solenoids. Took time and ~200 miles for the software to adjust to the new patterns.

I'm gonna have the dealer change the fluid and add the Lube Guard at my 30,000 service

Does this take the place of the regular transmission fluid or is it an additive?
It is an additive. 1oz per qt of fluid. Or just use a single 10oz bottle at first on a full trans, close enough.

Forget fluid changes. If you've got the defect you've got the defect and fluid won't put the pieces back together. If you don't have a problem you don't need to do anything. Your biggest issue is that you're out of the warranty period unless you got an extended warranty.

Terrible advice.

The CDF problem doesn't do what he's described. What he is describing is sluggish valves, and those can absolutely be helped by fresh fluid and LG.

No one should ignore fluid changes in these transmissions, it might not (or rather won't) prevent the CDF problem, but it can help your valve body to live a longer life.
