I'm kinda excited ? ? ? , I'll be back behind the wheel soon , armed with an OK from Ford to give me a NEW TRANSMISSION!!!
Let us know how that works when they pull the freeze frame data out of the ECU and find out what you were doing before the trans let go.

Asking for a friend, how long is that data kept and can I view it with Forscan?

My understanding is that it keeps a certain amount of data when a CEL is triggered. Something like back 30 seconds. Not an expert on that though, just my understanding of how it works.

I've had some minor issues with clunky/harsh shifts since I bought the truck. I did put the Unleashed 93 octane tune on it. I'm wondering how the dealership is going to treat this if I were to take it in for this TSB.
I've got the Livernois tune, Fitzstick and the PPE pan. It's gonna be obvious I messed with it so I'm hoping my mods, fluid changes and luck work in my favor.

If my trans blows and I have to pay seven grand I want a 5-speed swap!

You can always "flip the script " on them if they cry that you modded it , if Ford had made a "proper" transmission that shifted correctly, you wouldn't have had to mod it in the first place , if that doesn't work, you can try and pull the "Ranger5g forum" card (very powerful when used correctly)

Hm. I have an Oct 2020 built truck with 18K miles, purchased end of March 2021. I wouldn't say it has harsh shifts, but it does sometimes like to camp out in 7th when it should be in 4th, and I tap the accelerator to get it to shift.

I just had it in the shop to replace the HVAC actuator and got it in under warranty period. Waiting on replacement parts. When I go back in I'll ask them to check out the trans.

The only time mine doesn’t shift smooth is the first few times it shifts in the morning and that is only occasionally. I know there isn’t an answer but I’m still curious lol.
I have the Livernois tune, and mine behaves much like yours. When it's cold, the first couple of shifts in the morning can be a little rough, but then it's fine. Been doing that since new.

Thank the EPA for that. These things are programmed to head to 10th as fast as possible.

Pretty normal I'd say. Cold fluid is thicker fluid, messes with shift timings till it gets warmed up a bit.

Does it only warm while moving? And not while just idling.?

It does, but it would take forever to get any appreciable amount of temperature in it.

I used to think that Ford routed coolant from the engine and used it to warm the trans. After logging data and watching temps for a while, I'm not convinced that is the case. Our engines just don't make a lot of heat and in colder temps it is all they can do to get themselves up to temp, and the transmissions lags WAY behind that.

Best way to get heat in the trans is to drive...or idle through stop-and-go traffic, that does a pretty good job as well.

Here's a good example:

https://datazap.me/u/ctechbob/log-1705740120?log=0&data=1-2-3-4-5-6

Cold morning (23f) my 14 mile drive home from work. It takes almost the whole trip for the engine to get close to 200 deg, and the trans is JUST making it to over 160, which is generally regarded where the 10R80 is starting to be happy where the fluid temp is. (They like to be between 160-220).

Someone recently posted that they cycled thru the gears (Park, Reverse, Drive) a couple of times before heading out on a cold day. My trans has always had one or two harsh shifts when the air temp is colder than 50ish. I tried doing that the other day and didn't have that first harsh shift. It would be interesting to see if that might alleviate the initial hard shift(s) for others. I'm going to continue to try it when I remember to see if it is repeatable.
