Why do you call it that? You've had 98K flawless miles and now have had the bad luck to crack a gasket. You haven't told us what gasket it was, from the coolant lose I assume it was the head gasker. First one I have heard of.

Yes the first posted engine light is for the transmission, nothing to do with engine. What are the others for?

Yes, many of use have the questionable CDF drum design, which has been updated. But, if you look at all the vehicles running the 10R80 the number of failures is still relatively small.

With any vehicle you take your chances. Not sure any other make is any better or worse.

I will say that I would not have had a problem with a 2.5 Duratec or a 2.0 Duratorq similar to what was provided in Mexico. I didn't really need the EB but it was in the vehicle I wanted. :p

Beware the EGR system - cheaply made and failure prone, if the EGR cooler leaks

How much coolant did you lose/were you loosing when the EGR cooler gave it up ? Any signs of overheating. Doesn't take long or a lot of anti freeze in the wrong places to do a number on the engine.
There was a post sometime ago where the EGR cooler failed and wasted the engine, kind of a cheaply made system and bears watching with higher miles.
That might have been the case. EGR code went bad on a trip and mechanics along the way including Ford service techs said it was okay even though the cooler water was dark tea color. I got back to Texas and changed it, but have been going through 2+ gallons of coolant in the last 2 months since the EGR was replaced and still throwing the EGR code error and now faults and tranny codes too.

I read a gew things into this post. First, find a new service shop because it reads as if you have been there a lot lately and just now getting somewhere. Second, labor rates and parts costs may be driving them to suggest a replacement long block ( block and head assembly). Third, sounds like your transmission is on the way out. If you are relying on a shop to do the work, which it sound like you are, you probably need to be lining up about $15k to cover parts and labor.

Would it line up with all the fittings and codes? Is there a reliable swap motor for these trucks?
No, the 2.7 has it's own failure issues and there is no plug and play swap currently.

So you‘ve been dumping coolant in. May have saved a lot of money if you addressed this early on.

Seems like a lot of this story is missing.

I went through a head gasket on this little guy…

Got that little Mitzubishi motor way too hot, way too many times going up and over mountain passes in BC. I knew I was pushing it too hard but I was young and didn’t have a care in the world - just kept adding coolant.

Eventually, it started leaking a lot of oil out the back side of the head by the firewall - gasket failed between two of the water channels, so no coolant in the oil. FIL said I warped it from overheating it too much so we pulled it, rebuilt it, had it milled and blasted - looked like a brand new top end and ran great.

So, as others are saying, you can cause a host of other issues by ignoring cooling problems and you can blow a head gasket and not have coolant and oil mixing. Well, at least in a fun little Dodge Power Ram 50 - I still chuckle when I think of that model name. ?

$175 to the have top end rebuilt
$25 for the gasket kit
$8 for lunch at Wendy’s for the FIL. ?

Most likely I'll use a turn key 2.7 though it shouldn't be too difficult to throw one in since the ranger and bronco share a chassis. As for reliability its average but I just wanted to throw one in mostly as am upgrade to power

This is the same thing that happened to me '20 at 36,400 miles. I dumped the rig, and lost all faith in Ford. These failures are happening way too often to be considered normal. Even with the small sample size that is this forum, too many people are having problems.

IDK bout all that man, the bronco doesn't have the same transmission as us, and just cause we share the same chassis doesn't mean everything else will fit. I would love to see it but tbh its gonna be a bitch to do, even on a bronco

Be careful when you say the same chassis. The Bonco chassis is different from the 5G chassis. Suddle changes were made to get the V6 to fit. That is one of the reasons the 6G is wider to fit the V6 in. You will need a big shoehorn to get that 2.7TT into a 5G Ranger with all the associated plumbing. Not saying it can't be done, just good luck. It will not be a drop in.
