The first 80k was a dream! I took it all over Southwest /USA, some trails but no heavy off-road as I only have the Fx2 and it is all stock, never got around to custom stuff.

The check light started coming on and the EGR cooler got that changed and flushed but the truck has never been the same.
The engine light keeps coming up again for the same code and drinking coolant like a thirsty horse.

I got a shop to look at it and they put a camera down and said a gasket is cracked (a $3,500 job), they said Ford does not recommend changing it and that getting a crate replacement ($7,500 job) is best but it still might not fix the EGR issue!!!??!!

Does anyone else have experience with this 2.3 EcoBoost engine?

It looks like you also have the transmission issue that is plaguing all of us based on that first alert, what do the other ones say? As far as the EGR I have very little knowledge on that. First question is do you have an extended warranty because if not you will need to not only deal with the engine but also the transmission.

No extended warranty as from 60-80k+ were no issues and now no one will give me a warranty...

Damn, I'm sorry man, that is likely going to be a steep bill, how difficult would it be to get rid of the truck and cut your losses? That would be what I do tbh

Fixed that for you.

Maybe, maybe not.
Yeah I definitely think that with good maintenence as well as some old fashioned luck you will be fine, the fact is though the design is fundametally flawed (seals to be specific). And based on how many I have seen with the harsh shifts and other symptoms ford tries to say is normal, its a lot of us. My ranger shifts smooth as silk now as it should. The bucking bronco shifts aren't normal.

Why does Ford only make this engine an option and be an otherwise great truck with this turd of a motor??
Why do you call it that? You've had 98K flawless miles and now have had the bad luck to crack a gasket. You haven't told us what gasket it was, from the coolant lose I assume it was the head gasker. First one I have heard of.

Yes the first posted engine light is for the transmission, nothing to do with engine. What are the others for?

Yes, many of use have the questionable CDF drum design, which has been updated. But, if you look at all the vehicles running the 10R80 the number of failures is still relatively small.

With any vehicle you take your chances. Not sure any other make is any better or worse.

The tech said it was Cilider 4 was cracked and that when they put it under pressure it was dumping coolant into it and smoking etc.

The first 80k was good, the last 19 have been limping along and changed the P2457 EGR cooler and still have check engine lights and have been taking it to service almost every week when the light comes on.

Then I started getting notices for engine faults which had been getting worse and I needed to top off the coolant almost every day.

Here are some of the other notices, I still have 3 years of payments and this won't be a very good trade-in in this condition.

So a cracked cylinder, not a cracked gasket.

Any mods?

I'm not a wrench-head so my wording might have been wrong. He did quite a replacement gasket or heads but said Ford advises against that. I will call a Ford service rep for a second opinion but the local dealers are giving me the run-around and say my truck will sit in the queue for two weeks before their techs can look at it.

Beware the EGR system - cheaply made and failure prone, if the EGR cooler leaks

How much coolant did you lose/were you loosing when the EGR cooler gave it up ? Any signs of overheating. Doesn't take long or a lot of anti freeze in the wrong places to do a number on the engine.
There was a post sometime ago where the EGR cooler failed and wasted the engine, kind of a cheaply made system and bears watching with higher miles.

Do you have coolant mixed with oil or rather in the crankcase?
