Last weekend, I decided to climb into the bed using my usual method of grasping the side rail and stepping up onto the rear tire. After shuffling some stuff around, I decided to exit the bed via the tailgate, which was in the fully-upright and latched position. I reached down and unlatched the tailgate. Not wanting it to slam open on the cables (which probably would have survived the impact) I proceeded to lower it gently into the open position. Everything was going well, until a white-hot lightning bolt of pain hit my surgery-needing arthritic shoulder.

So today, I turned-in my Man Card and installed the damper.

Now, how're you going to lift it up? o_O ?

You sissy! Haven't you heard of Aleve? All of us get old, and all of us will sooner or later have a twitch or two. It is life, don't you know!
Quit candy-coating it and say what you mean!

I do have the giant Sam’s Club bottle of Aleve. It helps after the fact, but the show-stopping twinges are becoming more frequent. Its osteoarthritis, passed-down from my mother. Hands, neck, right shoulder.

I know I am. ? J/K I've had shoulder problems and they're not fun!
I gotta say, I was so shocked that I nearly followed the tailgate down with my whole body. It would have been a most impressive display in the Home Depot parking lot. I did release it, though, and it slammed down on the cables, mocking me, until I climbed down and closed it forcefully with both hands.
YOU’RE WORTHLESS AND WEAK!

I have Osteo Arthritis in just about every joint. Pfffft, it’s nothin’. Rheumatoid Arthritis to the point I have to self-inject every two weeks with a needle the size of rebar or go back to walking with two canes.

Despite all that, still proudly damperless.

Now, turn your head and don’t even look at me.

Retired, work is a four letter word.
Maybe you should have bought this to begin with? It's safer. :)

I really don't understand the anti-damperism. It is so dang useful for someone who uses the tailgate a lot. I keep all my running stuff back there cause it can get stanky sometimes, so the gate is opened and closed a lot. I haul trash at least once a week as well. And I gotta say when the temps drop, the damper is even slower, giving even longer time to make sure you're ready to throw that crap in there.
