Last weekend, I decided to climb into the bed using my usual method of grasping the side rail and stepping up onto the rear tire. After shuffling some stuff around, I decided to exit the bed via the tailgate, which was in the fully-upright and latched position. I reached down and unlatched the tailgate. Not wanting it to slam open on the cables (which probably would have survived the impact) I proceeded to lower it gently into the open position. Everything was going well, until a white-hot lightning bolt of pain hit my surgery-needing arthritic shoulder.

So today, I turned-in my Man Card and installed the damper.

no no, this is clearly a medical emergency.

although a self inflicted one....

when you get healthy again, the damper comes off just as easy as it went on....
I put the bolts and the instructions in a ziploc bag in the bottomless pit below my console tray, just in case I need to back-out of this pitiful mess. The Orthopedic Surgeon that supplies me with cortisone shots is probably having a good “I told you so” laugh behind my back.

I gotta say, I was so shocked that I nearly followed the tailgate down with my whole body. It would have been a most impressive display in the Home Depot parking lot. I did release it, though, and it slammed down on the cables, mocking me, until I climbed down and closed it forcefully with both hands.

How can we be sure you'll never waver? Are you trustable?
Another one lost to the great damper war. Only a few of us remain.
Oh, nevermind.

I know I always joke about it but they do come in handy IF you're someone who uses your bed a lot. Hope your shoulder get better and don't remove that damper because you'll re-injure yourself which could lead to amputation next time.
