I've been doing highway driving (unloaded) on tires inflated to 42psi. Seems way too high. Tires are non stock 116XL tires (265-65-R17). These tires are rated at 49psi max on sidewall but for ride quality I dont see why 35psi wouldn't ride better. Also the tire chart online recommends 35psi for this tire with a load capacity up to 2379

I roll at 39 Psi in my Tremor. That is ideal for ride quality and tire longevity.

Every tire is going to be different. The best way to tell is the chalk test.

The stock FX4 tires I kept them
At 37psi

My new 285/70-17 Milestar patagonia MT’s run great at 20psi

Every tire has a sweet spot depending on application.

My STX 4x4 with 17" wheels has 30psi for all four tires on the door placard. I run the tires at 32 F / 31R cold.

Check your door jamb.

I keep my tires at 32PSI all around, even though the spec says 30PSI cold. I find that the ride quality is improved slightly, and the tires don't "grab" ruts on bad roads as much. It definitely makes a difference on long trips on the interstate too!

i went to 265 70 17 on the 17s and run 35 psi. id say unloaded 42 sounds a bit high. i like the chalk test yall posted and may try it myself. i may experiment with them a bit but that was the recommended psi from discount tire. if im off road in something i expect to be real bumpy or a lil hairy i run about 20. i think 18 would be better for ride and traction but id rather get un stock than have a tire drop the bead.

Retired, work is a four letter word.
I read that title and thought the OP was driving 'High'!! Glad it was tire pressure. I run 35 in the stock Hancooks.

You are definitely way to high on your tire pressure. Assuming you have LT tires you should be at 38 PSI for that size. If you have P rated tires with stock size runs 30 PSI. Simple as that. Unless you are running a different size always follow the placard on the door

I ain't got time or interest in chalk tests or whatever. Set the tires at the door sticker pressure and then go get a burger, or a beer. :)

116T-xL. Is neither LT or P rated and not stock hence the question...maybe they LT then IDK. Just found it odd that dealer had inflated them to 42 psi

All I know is when I picked up my ride and drove it home my teeth rattled and those are still the permanent ones. Checked my pressure and was at 45 psi all around. Took them down to 32 and been chalk tested to show for my rig a good pressure. YMMV

I need a little more information here. What tire exactly do you have and what is the door placard stating?

Also 116T is just a load and speed rating. The tire will still be either a P(passenger) or LT(Light Truck) type. The question is wich.

Was def confused why dealer set so high but will try 35-38psi range tmrw. Payload capacity is up to 2128lbs on the Ranger and my 265/65R17 XL tire load capacity is at 2379lbs for 35psi set-point.
