Was def confused why dealer set so high but will try 35-38psi range tmrw. Payload capacity is up to 2128lbs on the Ranger and my 265/65R17 XL tire load capacity is at 2379lbs for 35psi set-point.
That should be a good starting point and you'll notice a big difference in the ride. If you do go off road just go down to 18 psi and it'll be a much better ride over the rocks and bumps. My tire deflators are preset to 18 psi and I've never had any problems with the bead falling off because you're going slow. I've gone as low as 16 psi but haven't gone any lower than that.

I've been doing highway driving (unloaded) on tires inflated to 42psi. Seems way too high. Tires are non stock 116XL tires (265-65-R17). These tires are rated at 49psi max on sidewall but for ride quality I dont see why 35psi wouldn't ride better. Also the tire chart online recommends 35psi for this tire with a load capacity up to 2379
42 is way too high. Set them at 35 and see how they wear. Mine calls for 30 all-around but we get wide temperature fluctuations where I live so I set them all at 32.

HI Chris,

You are doing it right to consult the tire manufacturer's website for their recommendation. You can do he chalk test, but just following the manufacturer's recommendation should be enough. By the way, the sidewall pressure on the tire is the MAX pressure the tire can withstand and is rarely used as it is an upper limit only...

best,
Phil

I need a little more information here. What tire exactly do you have and what is the door placard stating?

Also 116T is just a load and speed rating. The tire will still be either a P(passenger) or LT(Light Truck) type. The question is wich.
I swear there is no P or LT markings on sidewall however there is xL (extra load) tire marking and was able to find psi load recommendations for this size. 265\65\R17 116T XL. 35psi is on my door placard for my previous stock 16" tires. 49psi max rating on sidewall of these Radar Renegade A/T5 tires. Lowered down to 38 this morning and felt noticeable improvement over harsh road sections. Maybe the xL 49 max is why they filled to approx 44psi...not sure
