Hooray! Installing these updates is very vague and uncertain. Unlike most other software updates and/or installations you have prompts, notifications and a progress indicator for guidance and even then there can be glitches. This takes considerable persistence and guesswork to get the end result âś”
FWIW, the Windows laptop was running Vista. ?. And yes, all you said, plus dealing with the truck wanting to turn itself after 30 minutes or whatever, so babysitting that along with all the rest. But the final result was decent and I didn’t have to waste a day at the dealer after all. Good luck to everyone. I’ll be leaving this old Ranger-pal behind tomorrow. Just helping out.....

That wait of 25-30 minutes without any notifications from the time the Flash Drive was plugged in and engaged was agonizing. Didn't know if anything was happening and if I should just shut down and start over again. Glad I waited.

I keep an old Win 7 Laptop around for the situation like you went through but also for listening to and burning CD's/DVD's. I have quite a few CD's/DVD's that are still useful with today's technology. I use a Flash Drive with my music on it to listen to in the Truck and really like that format which I also use with my Win 10 computers. You are fortunate to have a decent version of Vista that got you through. I got a computer once with the worst version of it ever. Constant errors, glitches and malfunctions. This was during the time when Microsoft had realized what a dud Vista was and was giving free upgrades to Win 7. The nightmare ended when I switched it out for Windows 7.

My dealer charges $132.00 to do a version update

I did make it really clear to the service advisor today that no money was going to change hands. He agreed to that. If he had said 'we have to' I would have just left and ended up doing what just worked anyway. No hard feelings really except that it wasn't my fault that the 20136 messed with the screen controls, so I'm happy with the result and it not needing a confrontation which isn't my style anyway.

Yes, I have some hobbies: radio things ham radio, etc where there just aren't any versions for the Mac. I'm well-versed in the various ways of using a Mac to run Windows, but I find them all lacking or clumsy for one reason or another, so at home I have a couple Thinkpads running Win10 and another Enterprise-type laptop running Win7 for just such an occasion. I just didn't foresee needing them on this trip. I'm glad my friend had this older Vista box and thought of it. It got the job done even though it hadn't been on in years.....at least 6 since it didn't have the correct wifi setup for this residence and had been out of use for many years before that.

The silence can be deafening when you're doing the update for the truck, I agree. I think the process is just enough user friendly if you're pretty comfortable doing this sort of thing. Fortunately, it wasn't my first rodeo, but my friend just wouldn't attempt this sort of thing on her own. I've gotten her more and more comfortable and fearless with these kinds of things over the last 20 years, but she isn't ready to jump off this particular cliff on her own, so enter me again, white horse and all, sort of. Maintaining the home network, mesh routers and such all falls to me as well even though I don't live here anymore.

Later, all.....

Agreed. I rip all my music (that I care about) to FLAC. I can't remember now, but it seems like the Ranger would even play FLAC natively from a USB stick. Anyone know?

Not a clue, but this truck did 2 separate wifi/OTA updates yesterday, neither of which was 20282, but then I never was clear if ..282 was for everyone or just those unlucky enough to have gotten bitten by the climate control screen issue....

Did his 2019 have the climate screen issue? If not, maybe he indeed didn't need 20282???

I'm guessing something in there wasn't identical? Was one Nav, other Non-Nav, or 4" vs 8"?

...and you did request the download for his truck using his VIN? I assume the d/l's are specific to the particular vehicle and its features, etc....

Not sure this is the right place to ask, but, here goes.

1) Does this update the maps or is that like all the other nav systems I have had, you need to pay for that?

2) I have the climate controls on my screen, but, Ford still shows this update is outstanding (SYNC3 v3.4.20282), what does it actually do and should I do it?

Any help is appreciated

I've had no luck. Every time I tried to download the download freezes. I've tried on a Mac and a PC and tried at work and home and every time it freezes. WiFi just spins and spins.

I have already set up a usb flash drive to do the upgrade ... just curious if it's worth up to 30 minutes of my life with the engine running?

1. No, and no it's free for a few years.
2. Yes, it's more of a major release than just fixing climate controls.

You can start it, maybe complete it, in accessory mode.
