You just have to catch them on a day they are hungry for a sale and be prepared to walk. The Ford dealer I was at last week wanted $499 for the doc fee and also claimed it was non-negotiable. When I mentioned that I qualified for X-Plan they were more than willing to X-Plan a Ranger and then as I recall the doc fee dropped to $199. So somehow, when you qualify for X, A, Z or D Plans, the rules on the doc fee change. But back to original point, agree to a price on the truck. Then when they attempt to add the $400-$600 doc fee, tell them no deal, and reopen negotiations. They can always reduce the price of the truck to cover the amount of the doc fee you are unwilling to cover. If they stand firm, just tell them you will have to think about it and head towards the door. If they really want the sale, they will not let you out the door. Unless somebody else comes along and buys the truck, you can always go back in the a few minutes or the next day.
Doc fee can not exceed $100 on X-Plan or they are in infringement of their franchise agreement.

X-Plan

  • Partner Recognition X-Plan sponsors may NOT accept referral fees.

Document Fees

  • Dealers will be permitted to assess up to $100 in documentary fees on each delivery to an eligible purchaser under the terms of the Plan, unless otherwise provided by state or local laws or regulation. Each dealer is responsible for complying with applicable laws or regulations.

Interesting, this is useful. How can we (purchasers) know what the state or local laws are, in case they over-ride the $100 fee?
For example, in certain parts of california, the documentation fee for a new 2021 ranger is ~$450 (lots of taxes added to the base fee)

Typically the $100 applies as state caps are generally more than that. Many states have enacted caps to prevent gouging/extortion in fees charged. If a state disallows doc fees or caps them lower that would apply.

When we owned our automobile dealership, we only had a $99 doc fee in part to not have to reduce it for plan buyers and to have a consistent doc fee to all parties on all deals. If someone refused to pay it we simply reduced the car price by $99 to stay within the constraints of the laws. It is illegal in some states to negotiate doc fees or to charge different doc fees to different parties, but we never had to worry about it since our doc fee fell below the cap accepted by the plan rules and since we were charging every party the same amount for the doc fee.

Here is some info that I found online that discusses state doc fee rules.

Your best source of info is your dmv/tax commission and often their website lists these rules or you could call and they should be able to provide you this info.

I'm sure you know, but just a reminder that certain seat covers can prevent proper seat-side-airbag deployment, since the airbag comes from the outer edge of the seat ;)
Yes, found that out here. Never knew that, thanks

I was initially settled on the lariat mostly because of leather, but that's only because I've had them on most of my other vehicles. I am willing to try the cloth and maybe get seat covers. I did just find a 2020 same trim with only 5,000 mi (courtesy vehicle) for $35,000. Seems like a no-brainer compared to the 2019. I test drove a non-FX4 vs FX4 last week and I prefered the FX4 because it seemed to handle the roads bumps with less harshness. I am suprised that the XLT doesn't have push button start. Pretty crazy to have to use a key in 2021.
Well, drove the used 2019, but ended up going with new 2020 Lariet. Just couldn't get past some of the 'cheap" features of the XLT and didn't want to regret the purchase. Obviously paid more for the Lariet, but no regrets and got good trade on Ridgeline.

So, considering a 2020 Lariat that a dealer here in WNC was using as a loaner. It has over 4,000 miles on it now. MSRP of $45,600... they have it advertised for $39k. Their asking price seems high...particularly for a 2020 with that many miles on it. Does anyone know what the factory / dealer discount should be for a loaner with that many miles? $5k?, $6k? Also, I should be able to get them to include the other incentives including the $1750 for a 2020 I see advertised a lot, plus any other dealer discounts, right? I'm thinking the sales price should be more along the lines of $36-$37k then adding the doc fees, taxes, etc., something like $38500 "out the door"....Does this sound reasonable???? Thoughts?

In the market to lease a 2021 XLT, black appearance package in Cactus Gray. I've basically had the dealers I've dealt with offer me invoice price, but Ford has no incentives at the moment, which is a major hang-up when it comes to monthly payments. I have a trade in vehicle, a soon to be returned Dodge Charger that is way under mileage that I may buy and immediately flip. I'd let the dealer buy it if I could, but for those that know US Bank, the dealer payout is astronomical... about $4,500 more than my personal payoff. So for me to take advantage of the equity in it, I need to purchase and sell it immediately. Based on quotes from the dealer, my payoff and what the dealer will pay me for it is about $3,000 to be used as a down payment. Being a lease any more money out of my pocket is not a great idea.

Still frustrated by the lack of any incentives in January and now February. Here's to hoping they have something to sweeten the pot come President's Day. Any reason to be optimistic based on past President's Day sales?

ETA, spoke to a dealer today about a leftover 2020 and still not many incentives, I think only $650 lease cash.

Been shopping for a 2020/2021 xlt crew cab with minimum fx4 and 301mid package since last September and I honestly cannot get a quote for under 40k otd in the WA state snohomish/king county area. I even pit 7 dealerships against each other and no one cared.

im sorry, but i feel many ppl purchase OTD quotes on here are misleading and or lying, i wish more ppl would provide proof. Reason i say this is not to complain, but to have others have a realistic expectation when shopping. Or maybe WA state sales isnt slowing down and so dealers dont care.... i guess thats possible.

search is probably done for now, ill probably wait to see what happens in the coming months or end of year.
I find the same thing in illinois - not willing to negotiate, especially on the 2021 (most don't even have any Rangers on their lot), but when I go into Wisconsin or look online at dealers in Texas and Florida, lots of inventory and much better prices.

How does that price compare to the other trucks in your area? Meaning, what other "midsize" or comparable trucks are there (perhaps non imports) and what would those cost? Perhaps the Ranger is so expensive for you just because of the cost of importing it.
