To Trade/Sell or not

The past few weeks I have been I have been thinking about the future of my current 2019.

It has 107k on it. When I purchased it new in 2019, I purchased the top of the line Ford Protect warranty plan. Its good until 2026 or 125k. I have been told I can extend it after 125k.

I have driven a 2024 Ranger and a 2024 Colorado. They are almost identical, but I have to do more research on the extended warranties.

My concern is where my 2019 has 107k on it, I am losing value, but it's almost paid for.

Should I keep driving it or should I make the move to something new(er)?

The truck runs great (and meticulous maintained), Its garage kept, it gets detailed and undercoated (waxoyled at the dealer when I bought it new) twice a year and it goes to the dealer for all servicing.

I am looking for opinions and feedback with this matter.

That's really tough for anyone to answer because everyone's (financial) situation is different.

Do you want another truck payment?

Do you a want high insurance payment?

How long do you usually keep your vehicles? Some like to drive them into the ground while others like to drive something new every couple of years.

Me personally I like to drive something somewhat new and usually trade them in every 3-4 years.

If the above isn't a concern I'd go for the new one with a new warranty. Then if you like it you can always add the ESP in a couple years.

I would keep it, but that is me I like to not have any car payments. You have been paying for 6 years on this truck. If you get a new truck you will probably pay for another 6 years. Keep the truck save money for 4 to 6 years at least. Even a major repair is cheaper than a new loan. Plus you know what you have in your hand with the current truck, and an extended warranty also.

What will a new truck do that your current one can't or won't do?

Do you still like it?

I understand that liking it is a big factor in whether to keep it or not.

When I had my 2018 Frontier I couldn't stand to see the POS sitting in the garage so it had to go.

Several times I have thought about trading mine but it always comes back to realizing that I will get little to zero benefit from a different mid size truck.

There's been a lot of talk about this, and I've written about it, a lot. I have a scab. I don't want a crew. I just paid my truck off and retired in late 2024. I do not want a short bed, nor do I want a payment.

I plan to keep my truck, and have 15 more months on my bumper to bumper warranty. I don't ever buy extended warranties because I believe, in the long run, I don't use them, all of them considered together, over time.

If my truck trans takes a dump and I have to replace it myself, so be it. I'm not buying something else in the next 5 years, unless things change and companies decide to build something I want to buy.

A slightly different take - while no one can answer the question for you, my opinion (as others have stated) is that I don't like to have a truck payment. Mine is paid off, does everything I ask of it (and more) and has been trouble free thus far. I really enjoy driving it and like the looks better than a 6G. Even if my transmission takes a dump, I will still be better off financially than buying a new Ranger.

I think one important thing that @Mighty Little Blue said which I totally agree with - you know what you have - a new vehicle you don't - at least for a while.

IMO if you’re just gonna get another midsize then it should be because there’s an entertainment element for you in having a new vehicle even tho it’s the same thing. And that entertainment value is worth the vehicle. That’s the only reason I can think of at this moment in a midsize for a midsize exchange that makes sense. If the new vehicle ain’t worth the entertainment cost, keep the 2019.

if you have need for full size capability and don’t mind losing the perks of a midsize (better for urban environments and more capable offroad in most cases) then it could be worth it.

I’m not going to assume your financial situation. You can handle that part yourself.

FWIW I’ve run into several perfect full size trucks for sale that nearly got me to sell my Ranger. Even this week. So far my Ranger has endured them all, but I’m sure it’s a matter of time. Between my home and my motorcycles, a full size would be slightly more helpful. If it weren’t for the motorcycles, I’d have little need for a full size.

If your truck is in nice shape cosmetically and not suffering any issues, consider keeping it for another year (or two). Your warranty will carry you most of that, if not all, and then you'll be in a position to look for a 6G lease return that's already taken its initial depreciation hit.

At over 100K miles, I don't think you're going to lose as much value as you'd gain from buying a 2-yo lease return.

You are already over 100k miles, so I would not be concerned about losing value if you go to say 115-125k.

So, since you have the extended warrant, has it paid off or did you lose money on it?

What to become a millionaire and retire with no concerns? Drive that thing until it’s a pile of rust. The easiest way to sabotage personal finance is to always maintain a car payment.

I bought a new Ranger in 1988, paid it off in 3 years and drove it for 36 years. The year I sold it, the annual registration was $19, and liability & comp insurance was $300 A year. I bought my next new car in 2005, a V-6 Mustang 5-speed, put half down and paid it off in a year. Now, twenty years later, it’s super cheap to own too.

I was saving for the past 2 years to buy for cash a 2024 Ranger, easy to do with no car payments, but saw a 2021 SCab Lariat for $31k with 30k miles. I was able to pay cash for that, and had enough left over to pay cash for a $14k Super Pacific X1 camper top too.

I wasn’t making a fortune working, but with no car payments, I was able to save a similar amount in payments to myself. If money is no object, trade in every few years, but if you want to retire rich, pick a nice vehicle, take great care of it, and enjoy what owning it after 20 years says about you.

I get more complements on my Mustang than I can count, and it’s not even a GT or modified. It’s just old and very well maintained.

If your truck is in the shape you describe keep driving it bank the money you won't be spending on a payment after yours is paid off. The care you have given it will pay off. The mileage you have on it will knock your trade value down and the dealer will steal it from you. Remember the philosophy of the dealer You pay retail for mine and I pay wholesale for yours.

It's lost most of it's value at 100k. Economic logic dictates you keep driving it until it has a major costly malfunction or becomes unreliable. If economic logic doesn't motivate you, the the 2025 Ranger has won the 2025 Truck of The Year, which includes full sized trucks.

This. You've already had one of your biggest depreciation hits. It doesn't make sense to get rid of it now. It maybe would have 20k miles ago.

For me, I love this generation of ranger and just have a hard time seeing myself replacing it. Unfortunately new vehicles keep getting bigger and bigger. The 6G ranger is 2" wider, and the new Tacomas are almost the size of an F150! They're massive for a "midsize" truck. The 5G ranger is the perfect blend of having tech and creature comforts without having so much that it's going to fail. I had a 2010 F150 before the ranger that was a platinum... and well unfortunately all of those luxury items failed at great expense, but my Ranger is a fully loaded one and is reliable as all get-out. Yes the transmissions have a known weakness, but if you get the CDF drum fixed, this transmission is WAY overbuilt for our trucks - so much infact that the 6G ranger got a downgrade in transmission strength. I think any direction you go is a downgrade - but you get what you pay for with my opinion.

I've been toying with the idea of leasing a new VW. The way I'd drive I'd never come close to going over on mileage lol.

1. Lower payment
2. All Maintenance/repairs covered during that time. Plus I'd get a loaner if needed.
3. 2-3 years turn in for new model.

But my OCD won't let me. Plus VW doesn't have much these days that interest me lol.

New 25' Taos intrigued me. Color I want, doesn't come with the color interior I want . To get that I have to get the Black Package, which is fine, but the color I want doesn't have the Black package option . Ok fine, new color w/Black Package, BP though adds a panoramic sunroof, which I don't want, but whatever...compromise. Well when you have the Pano roof, there's no sunglass holder which I rather enjoy in my Ranger. AND....my Ipod doesn't work in the newer models either...deal breaker .

If you look at how much you're actually paying for your truck (including interest) it may make you sick or you may not care but you are far from getting your moneys worth out of it. With your warranty and options to extend ($) it would probably be wise to keep it.
