New bugs. If it's not broke, don't break it.
What are you looking to update for? Any new features will be virtually unnoticeable. It's probably mainly bug fixes which will of course introduce new bugs.
I updated yesterday to the latest to fix an issue, it didn't fix it. I didn’t notice anything new but haven't looked for anything either.

What issues are you having? I updated mine the other day by making the Ford Thumb drive from Ford.

The only issue I had was the GPS with the red line was on the screen and compass did not work for a few days but take in account I don't drive much and it sit in the garage. But everything is working good. I don't think Ford updates there maps very well. At least not as good as my wife 23 Rav4 Hybrid XSE. Toyota's maps are superior to Fords. The Rav 4 had the 10.5 inch screen which I love. After driving the Rav4 and got the Ranger I fell I stepped back a few generations. ha ha

But GPS issue finally went away and all is good.

If you are still having issues I would head over to cyanlabs and use there software. I bought a APIM and all the components to upgrade my Sync 2 to 3 on my 15 F150 and cyanlabs was great. I also needed FORScan to input my vin in the new sync APIM but all you are doing is updating.

I installed the Sync 3 via wifi automatic update on Nov 10th. I have noticed changes on the phone and text pages, which now display more options, but that may have been from an iOS update.

Android Auto is now giving messages that it will no longer work if I don't update. I get this message like every week now. Eventually is does stop working unless I update.

My truck reverted to an older sync version out of no where (I’m wondering if it was a failed automatic update). The whole system went to a buggy factory software version and just went absolutely nuts. I had to manually update with a thumb drive. The update worked, but it failed to spit out the subsequent file to tell Ford’s servers which version my truck had. Oh well.

I’m highly skeptical of these software updates. So as others are saying, if nothing is broke then I wouldn’t go searching for fixes. If the android auto crap is insisting then it might force your hand. Godspeed.

Your issue sounds related to sync.
Traced down part of my issue yesterday. Android auto and waze not showing as an app.
Problem is there are so many variables between the phone, app and sync its hard to track down. Each has their own updates and settings and takes a while to figure out which one is at fault.
Not at all similar to your issue

I do the updates (via USB) and never see any difference. I figure it may be needed for some odd warranty claim in the future, but have no idea if that holds water (like a #4 spark plug!).

It's a rolling computer so there are bound to be bug fixes and, as pointed out, those could introduce bugs I suppose. And the process itself may clear cache (or cash, as the case may be) and do other housekeeping things to the operating system.

I'll keep on doing them ...

I have never heard of Android Auto needing the Head Unit to update. I drive alot of rentals for work and never seen this and you know the rental cars/trucks are not getting updated...

Now I can see that your phone needs to be updated.

im just going off of what MountainGoat said. That his Android Auto was yelling at him. It’s possible the app is what needs updated isn’t it? Not the head unit.

I did the latest update because the last update made me repair my phone everytime I started my truck, the maps took forever to load plus it was laggy and unresponsive. The new update fixed all the issues. I used cyanlabs updater this time. Much quicker and easier than downloading from Ford.

This is my history with map and Sync updates:
12-14-19 As delivered - Sync Build 19200 Map version NA 1 18

01-26-21 Updated Sync to Build 20282 Ford website
05-02-21 Updated Sync to Build 21020 Source not documented
05-03-21 Updated Nav to NA 1 19 Source not documented
05-18-21 Updated Nav to NA 2 20 OTA
07-04-21 Updated Sync to Build 21098 Ford website
08-11-21 Updated Sync to Build 21194 CyanLabs
09-22-22 Updated Nav to 2 21 Source not documented
10-25-22 Updated Sync to 22200 Source not documented
01-19-23 Updated Sync to 22251 Ford website
07-13-23 Updated Sync to 23088 CyanLabs
08-19-23 Updated Sync to 23188 CyanLabs

Build 21098 was very buggy but Build 21194 fixed the problems. Otherthan that, I don't have any problems with the updates. I don't worry whether or not if the Ford website has knowledge as to my current Build.

My 21 came with 21098 which had a bug that prevented Sirius XM Travel Link from interfacing with the nav preventing me from getting traffic conditions, road construction or accident notifications on the nav screen. 21194 fixed that. It also came with NA 1 19 maps so I updated to NA 1 20 maps.
