It really doesn’t help much. If you leave key on or Sync on it will time out anyway.
It won't time out if you turn off "Automatic Engine Shutdown” in the dash menu. The installation instructions that you download with the files state that. This may only apply to a Lariat.

Just out of curiosity which charger do you have?
I use the CTEK MXS 5.0 which is the one Ford re-brands on their accessory pages.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CD44RQO

And I added an extension cable, following @AzScorpion's advice to make it easy to use.

My "wiring" of it:
https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/what-did-you-do-to-your-ranger-today.3511/post-464715

It seems to work well and I no longer get the "going to sleep" message for the Ford App.

How about you, which do you use?

Must be a Lariat thing, I don't have that option in my menu on the XL/101A package version. =(

I have a battery charger/maintainer that I connect to my truck when I install sync updates. The main reason to keep the truck running is to not kill the battery. If you have a battery charger/tender, you don't need to keep the truck running...
On my first update I was able to use my 2A - 10A charger without running the motor for the SYNC/Map updates. Not so this last time. Kept going into 'low power mode' and shutting off. Ended up idling Lariat to complete the update. A sign of battery health? 41+ months 'in service'.

I've done several updates while connected to a battery charger and the engine off. Never had an issue with it timing out...

I drove for the sync update. Nav took about 2 hours...
Interesting, when I did the NA 2 21 map update on the Ranger it took an hour as did the NA 2 20, NA 1 19 and NA 1 18 on my 17 Mustang. The current Sync update took a little less than 30 minutes.

Wonder why it took you so much longer?

Good question, I was not happy.
UofMEngineer did mention that it seems to depend on the flash card. I used a fast Samsung USB 3.1 128GB flash card so I wasn't expecting it would take 2 hours...which card did you use?

I should have clarified. Key on engine off. I would never let it idle that long.

I'm very happy with it. I have three additional extender cables so that I can reach my truck even 10 feet away from the garage door. The charger itself stays in the garage (they have a wall mounting kit that I'll use after we get some electrical work done in our garage.

It's plugged in right now and because I have one cable coming out the grill, it's about as easy as possible to use.

Someone posted about a magnetic connector that they use to prevent accidentally driving off and breaking anything. It wasn't specific to this model but that's the only way I can see to make this any easier to use.

My "use case" is exactly what happened today. Kate went in to work today, so I backed Soupie out of the driveway, and parked on the street. She left 20 minutes later so I moved Soupie back into the driveway. So I started it twice this morning with only 20 seconds of engine running each time. And even though it's pouring rain, I plugged it in and now it;s charging.

The charger can't over charge the battery and won't kill it if left plugged in. I put one on my FJ40 since it's going to stay covered until next summer. That will keep its new battery in top shape during months of sitting out in a New England winter.

Good luck in whatever you decide to use! =)

I’ve done several also and even with a charger it shuts down and I have to cycle the the sync power button. it doesn’t seem to matter that it gets interrupted. Whatever works for you.

I should add I don’t bother with the charger anymore.

I have a bunch of USB memory sticks kicking around. I grabbed a 32G NXT 3.0 one for this update.

The update took about 10 minutes, probably because this isn't a fancy pants Ranger. =p

I followed the USB instructions and as soon as I put the USB in, it started. The only snag I have is that the XML file that is created after the update won't upload onto Ford.com. I imagine that's important for warranty purposes.

Interestingly, although I used CyanLabs to download the update rather than downloading the update from the official Ford site, the Ford site now recognizes that the update was made. I never received the XML file. I do have the Ranger setup for automatic updates so I believe that my Ranger reported the update to Ford as part of the communications between the Ranger and Ford. We all know that the communication occurs for updating FordPass, and allowing remote start, remote lock and unlock, etc.
