regular, straight road driving, steady throttle and whatever else, in whatever engine you have, the fuel consumption will be affected by the gear you choose.
I agree. Changing that changes the "operating point" of the engine. RPM's, Boost, ignition timing, valve timing, and EGR all could change as a result.

What I don't agree with is that 9th or 10th gear would yield better mileage than 8th gear because of lower RPMs. That might be the case, or it might not.

let me just state this in very simple terms so the slow ones can understand....if it does not make one bit of difference on fuel economy from gear 8 and gear 10....why did Ford and GM not stop at an 8 speed gearbox? They put 10 in there for a reason.
They put 10 in there because their computer simulations showed they could gain advantages with 10 gears. Ford disagreed with GM on their common transverse transmission design because their computer simulations demonstrated that 9 gears work best so they chose not to build it. The 10 gears actually break down as 3 OD gears (7th is 1:1) and first is extremely low ~4.7:1 that gives the 2.3L the ability to accelerate from a stop with a heavy load.

The bottom line is those 10 gears allow the engine to operate in its sweet spot.

we just had a post with someone towing their airstream trailer...what was their mileage again??? hmmmm. i think around 13mpg and everyone agreed that great gas mileage for towing. ask them what gear they towed in.
And that would be purely anecdotal, I expect low to mid twenties towing my Scamp, but it is honestly not clear whether that will be in "D", "S" or "Tow mode".
The point of my comment was not in specifics , it was in the last sentence which you discarded.

Just want to clear something up as it is a pet peeve of mine.

There is NO such thing as Sport mode in the new Ranger. Or any other Ford that I’m aware of

S purely stands for select shift. It’s in the owners manual

Wrong.
Owners Manual pg 151, 152. Just like the selection in the 2015 F-150, it's been around for years.

With a normally aspirated engine I agree with you....more RPM = more gas. In a turbocharged engine, gas consumption can vary even at the same RPM, depending on Boost. More boost = more gas. Fuel usage is now a function of not only RPM but Boost as well. If you want to maximize your Ranger mileage, you have a light foot on the gas pedal to minimize boost.
Should we not really be saying that fuel is a function of the total oxygen entering the cylinder? And THAT depends on RPM and Boost.

So what parameters are changed when you switch to Tow mode while in Sport mode?
What about manual mode and tow mode combined...
Then there's Drive mode and Tow mode combined:crazy:

In sport auto..how do you know if it went to 10?
Doc after reading this thread I gave it a shot. Started out in S mode let it manually shift getting on to the highway normal acceleration. Let it level off at 72 mph set the cruise, nice level stretch of road, bumped it into D it showed 10th gear with no RPM change.

After hitting c. 850 miles on the new Ranger, I decided to try "Sport" mode for the first time, and, wow, the engine really runs higher RPM, makes more noise, and accelerates faster--it feels like "S" turns the truck from mild-mannered Clark Kent to Superman! I will probably only use it for my daily drive to work and back, which is mostly on the freeway; Sport seems a little overkill for stop-and-go city driving....
