I agree. Changing that changes the "operating point" of the engine. RPM's, Boost, ignition timing, valve timing, and EGR all could change as a result.regular, straight road driving, steady throttle and whatever else, in whatever engine you have, the fuel consumption will be affected by the gear you choose.
What I don't agree with is that 9th or 10th gear would yield better mileage than 8th gear because of lower RPMs. That might be the case, or it might not.
