I’m not sure the actual day of production, but mine says 07/20 on the sticker in door jamb. Mine also has the Lariat package 500a.

Was there a document posted anywhere explaining this change?

SSM 49012 - 2020 Ranger - Transmission Selector Lever Backlighting Deleted - Built On And After 11-Jul-2020

2020 Ranger vehicles built on and after 11-Jul-2020 no longer have backlightingfor the PARK, REVERSE, NEUTRAL, DRIVE, and SPORT (PRNDS) indicators on the transmission selector lever. This is an operating characteristic of the vehicle and no repairs should be attempted for this condition. Do not submit a warranty claim for this condition.

Hi Stew,

Running changes are rarely documented outside of Ford and if so it would be in the Marketing areana. Looks like your vehicle was built on 7/31.

Confirmed! My 2020 XLT FX4 purchased in mid Sep 2020 has no backlight next to the shifter. This is my first Ford purchase, and the various deletes to save money is disappointing. I also own a Subaru and a Mazda, and they don’t do things like this (based on my experience.)

20 Lariat 501A, mine is illuminated, but it does not actually indicate what position the shifter is in. This bothered me at first, but I've gotten used to looking at the dash instead.
This is how mine is.

Running change, shifter backlight was deleted on 7/11/20 builds & later.
I'm confused more than usual. my truck built 9/19 already had the "delete"? it's silly to NOT have the selector light up AND NOT show what gear. I guess my old POS frontier won 1 fight

It looks like you have an XL - my guess is that it was only on the XLT and Lariat - at least before it was removed in July.

the penny wise and pound foolish tradition at ford leaves another customer disappointed in their $30k+ truck in pursuit of saving a couple bucks per unit

Didn't have that package? What?? the special "light up the PRNDS" package? Ridiculous...The stuff dealers say sometimes when they don't know the actual answer.
careful, some people on this forum get really butthurt and blame the customer if you suggest that the dealers make stuff up when they don't know the right answer!

I've got a 2019 Crew Cab Lariat FX4 Off Road with (as far as I know) all the bells & whistles.
And my console gear shift does not light up.

I always thought it was because they (engineers) didn't want it reflecting on the windshield at night. Maybe I was wrong.
But I don't miss it; I can see my selection on the dash display.
No big deal to me.

But, I guess mine is broken?
Shit.

I just looked at this tonight while driving. Build date 12/19. Lit up but useless because it doesn’t tell you what’s selected.

Never really noticed if mine lights up or not, 2019 XLT.
So who is going to open it up and see if the wiring and socket are there and just the bulb is missing? Like the foldable backseat headrests that were missing the button?

KJ I would rather have the folding rear seat headrest the the lighted display since it is right in front of you

Hi John,

Your experience is limited. I can speak to Mazda and they had their version of the Ranger in the Mazda version...they were always on deleting options etc to save cost. Can't speak for Sabaru, but we were aware of Toyota, GM, Chrysler, Honda of similar take away. That is one reason I bought a 2019 Ranger...no cost reductions.
