And yet...
https://electrek.co/2023/03/03/heres-how-many-evs-ford-plans-to-produce-2023/

Not sure why every article on electric vehicles has to be negative on here. It's amazing how many people shit on cell phones in their infancy (they're too big, the batteries don't last long enough, my reception sucks,...). Now everyone has one and the technology is leap years over the first models. It took 25 years to go from Motorola StarTAC to iPhone. 25 years from the Tesla Roadster/Leaf (officially launched in 2008/2010 respectively) would be 2033/2035, but I think that EV tech is advancing MUCH faster than cell phones ever did.

I don't own an EV but will in the future. The tech is coming, it will get better, and your kids and grandkids might look at your ICE vehicle like we look at a wall-mounted phone or payphone today.

Also, nearly all real innovation has started with government leading the charge:
https://www.theguardian.com/comment...private-sector-products-investment-innovation

[preparing for the incoming shit-storm of a very unpopular opinion on here I'm sure] ☔
In all seriousness, I think it’s easy to conflate these two techs since they are running parallel to each other and Tesla is pushing the envelope.

Is Tesla an easy target? Yes. Are people now looking for sleeping drivers when they see a Tesla. I know I am. And I agree, if someone (me) cracks wise about a Tesla driver and a pillow, it’s hard to see it as only a shot at the “self-driving” tech in the car.

Am I anti-Tesla?

Yes. Not because they are an EV - because they are just so ugly.

Self driving vehicles, self flying/operating planes, artificial intelligence, eventually will lead too....

You were making it sound like it was another EV bashing thread which it's not. I know I post a lot of negative EV threads but this for once wasn't one of them. lol
This was the first thing my groggy ass read this morning. I may not have absorbed the entirety of the content. Just went into a "Damnit Dave's crapping on EVs again!" rage.

Think the electric vehicle has made a positive impact on this kid's life? Would you want YOUR kid right next to him?
The list of negative consequences goes far beyond cost and lack of driving range. But no matter what, EV's are going to be crammed down everyone's throats whether they want them or not.
It could work if cars were on, say, rails, but then I live 15 miles from East Palestine, OH where rails didn't work out so well.

I don't know about rails, but our infrastructure would need to change for sure to accommodate autonomy. Could be as simple as an additive to the paint used in street markings that could make a marked improvement in safety.

Around here, they start construction it seems like once a week on the same stretch of road and the first thing they do is wipe the lane lines. The human drivers can't seem to figure out where to drive so I can't imagine a computer with cameras is going to figure it out.

Just had a visit yesterday from one of my friends and current Ford Engineer working on driverless Ford Vehicle systems. Interest discussion on where we are on fully atonomous vehicles....A long way off... Here are the six levels.... Ford is currently at #2. Mecerdes trying for #3, but not there yet.
Tesla is at #2...Not 3 or 4 as they claim according to my friend.

Painted lines disappear here due to weather. Buried bots dots would be covered 6 mnonths out of the year.

Visually yes. I think cameras are a good short term solution but for the Level 5 that Phil posted, cameras alone won't cut it. We'll need a tech that's supported in both the vehicle and road construction.

I'm not totally against them and there are some that should be required to buy them like repeat DWI recipients, old people loosing their sight and minds, and delivery vehicles. Just don't expect me to pay higher vehicle prices to fund this kind of program, which is what's happening now. That recent Ford repo patent actually will require funding by ICE vehicles because they are the only profitable vehicles they sell now. There are forums about crap like this if you are only interested in a Greta approved audience.

He's a rock chipper. In his country people get paid to make gravel, albeit very little. Explain to me how this kids life has anything to do with an EV? They chipped rocks before EVs and they'll still be chipping rocks after.
If you do an image search of "cobalt mining in congo" that image will be there. And many similar images.

I started driving in the late 80's, early '90s. My Dad was an old hot rodder and dirt circlectrack kart racer, and my step dad thought he was Jeremy Clarkson before Jeremy Clarkson was known here.

Driving has always been fun to me. From the first time I was allowed to slide accross the bench seat up onto my dad's lap to steer us home, to last Friday driving home from work.

In my short driving history I've seen us go from the malaise days of the eighties to what could only be described as a Renaissance of fun. When I got my license a new Mustang GT put down respectable numbers compared to it's competition. Compared to today and my RANGER beats it in every single metric on offroad tires.

Now people want me in some damn appliance to get around?

Nope. Enjoy yourselves fellas. I'll think of you next time I'm sliding around a corner, spinning cookies in a snowy parking lot on the way home, and racing your self driving Escapes from light to light.

Unfortunately that's not what that kids doing. Getty images is fun and all, but there's a significant amount of misinformation on the internet.

This is very true, and it is an important insight to SOME of the difficulty of fully-autonomous self-driving vehicles. It's a LOT harder than it looks to do this.

At some point, it becomes ridiculous. Just hire a driver already. Take a taxi or Uber/Lyft.
