Screaming tailgate damper

It seems below 30F my damper screams and is very slow lowering. It’s ok going up but man it sure screams going down.

Above 30 no problem???

Just the cold temps.
Hatch struts on wifes Subaru and all our prior Subi's did the same thing.
There is either a light oil, like mineral oil in some, most are gas pressurized....don't know what the "dampers" have...maybe Dave knows.
You may not check under hood too much, but the hood struts will be affected a bit too.

I’d use KY lube but that’s what seems to be used on the damper since it screams.. IDK will WD40 really do the trick??
