PRE COLLISION ASSIST

Deleted member 1634

It's not dumb when someone tears their knee up in a parking lot at night walking between a vehicle with a ball/hitch sticking out. I think this is why some states make it illegal to leave them in.
I agree it's stupid to leave it in when you haven't towed for days and won't tow for days. If nothing else you usually end up hitting your own knee/shin. But I'm not sure if it should be illegal. Again, just my opinion.

What's the difference between a hitch or one of these?

As for insurance claiming extra damages? wtf? they make billions a year being scam artists as it is. When will they go after the road departments and hydro for using too hard of a material for posts and causing extensive damages to cars?
I hit a reflective diamond sign in my escape. they're like 6" squares on a skinny steel post....$4000 in damage. I took out a 6X6 sign post in my F150, $6000 in damage.
(and to add insult to injury, I had to cover the cost of replacing those signs.)
You should cover the costs of the signs, the other taxpayers didn't hit them.

Sure it is. If someone is walking that close to my truck to take out their knee on my hitch, then they are way too close to my truck. What's the difference between a hitch or one of these?

Mine has gone off twice - both times I’m not sure if 100% needed so I’m wondering if there’s a sensitivity setting? I was driving and there was a biker that was on side of the road and for some reason it triggered - the other time I was approaching a car turning left in front of me and it startled me because I was not in a crash sort of situation...

There is a sensitivity setting which is low-med-high,mines set on med. On the Lariat it's on the left dash screen in the settings, just not sure where it is on the STX

Page 202-205 of the online version of the owner's manual has a lot of information including the sensitivity settings of pre-collision assist.

I turned mine off. Mine would go off when I was coming up quickly on a slower vehicle, just about to pass and the truck kicks on the brakes. Everytime it kicked in, it was not a legit situation. I don't like it when I'm trying to actively drive and my vehicle is fighting me and not obeying my will. I like the adaptive cruise, but the collision avoidance and lane keeping got ix-nay'ed on my truck.

Hi,

Get a tall traffic cone and drive at this cone. The alert should activate.

Meh... careful folks. Hit a cone even doing 35 mph... you'll likely have damage to your vehicle.

As I stated my Ranger is the XLT trim. The pre collision settings are definitely in the settings menu but there is no strip of lights on my dash like on my Explorer. Does everyone that has an XLT have that light strip on their dash? I was just wondering if the lights were trim level or package specific? I do have the 302A package and my window sticker shows "Pre-Collision Assist W/AEB". Just no light strip on the dash. If in fact everyone has that light strip no matter what trim level or package selected this will be really weird. I may go to my dealership today and see what Rangers are on the lot and do a little investigating before I call them.
I have an XLT, every time I turn the engine on the strip lights up to show it is working, and the entire bar flashes on the windshield (like heads up display) when it activates.

I have earlier posts expressing my concerns about the pre collision not working on my XLT. As I stated before, I travel a 2 lane limited access state hwy frequently. 60 mph speed limit. There are homes as well as side country roads along this hwy. Plenty of people slowing down to turn, mail carriers part way in the road stopped to deliver mail, UPS/FedEx etc. I have purposely did some, what I would call, dangerous things to test the system, and nothing.

Today I was traveling this road, 60/65 mph, with a car at a distance in front of me. They swerved then I saw a cardboard box in the road. Probably 2' in height and 4' wide. I could't miss it due to on coming traffic at that moment. Kept my speed at just below 60, hung on for dear life, and BAMB hit the box it went under my truck and flew to the side of the road. No audible, no braking, nothing. Also, no damage to my truck.

So, maybe 2' X 4' object isn't tall enough?

I know how the pre collision does function, at least in my 2017 Explorer that I travel this road as well. On that vehicle it works as one would expect. I've had some audibles but never a braking situation, as well as one time on an interstate highway coming around a blind curve to stopped traffic the pre collision did it all, audible plus braking, but did it within a distance a person would expect.

This my be crazing thinking, but reading this forum there seems to be people with a lot of un answered problems that others never have experienced. Could it be it's supposed to be on my truck but it's not? Hey, weird things are happening to the trucks coming out of this assembly plant.

I had my oil changed about a month ago and discussed the pre collision system on my truck with them. When I picked it up they said all ok good to go. We together checked my settings and the service manager stated that they bumped up the sensitivity to high. I left. I may call them tomorrow.

To be clear this isn't a case where I drive like mad man and bought my vehicles with pre collision to avoid hazards for me. I just want to know if it works, I paid for this option.

Any input would be appreciated.

Here in Illinois it is a ticketable offense to drive around with the draw bar in the receiver when not towing. You can also be held liable for the damage it does to a vehicle that rear ends you.
I live in ILL and didn't know this. I don't drive around with a ball/hitch in the receiver, but this custom hitch cover...which i'm terrified if someone were to fall onto it and immediately go thru their skull like butter. It has just recently absorbed an anxious Super Duty driver who went on green before anyone before him...

You might be right but...
There was a proposed law to that effect a few years ago which also required that no drawbar extend more than 4 inches beyond the rear bumper. I understand that it failed in the Senate and has not resurfaced. So I think no such law exists, only the rumor.
The liability thing is just not so.

This article backs Floyd's statements: https://www.agriculture.com/machinery/other-machinery/pickups/hitch-hermit_254-ar21886

"In Illinois, House Bill 3669 was filed in 2009 to amend the Illinois Vehicle Code. In summary, it stated that if any portion of a ball mount and hitch receiver extends more than 4 inches beyond the vehicle's rear bumper, the ball mount must be removed from the hitch receiver when not being used for towing. The bill was referred to the Rules Committee but ended there."
