Menard's parking lot. ....Midwestern thing.
Since I got my 2019 Ranger I've been paying more attention to older models. Generally they are in surprisingly good shape for their age. ...can't say I've seen a rust bucket. Maybe a bit of rust here and there.
Photo is an example. Iowa, second rust capital next to Michigan.

I've driven a series of Rangers and Sport Tracs since 1999 and the older ones were definitely built simpler and tougher. The only thing that kills them is rust.

Yep the bodies hold up fairly well but rust will still bite you... on my 2005, the year before I traded it in for the 2019, the transmission line that goes to the radiator rusted out and started spraying trans fluid.

And one other odd item, the vibration dampener on the front of the crank failed. There is the inner mass and a outer mass connected by a thin band of rubber... at 13 years and 45K mikes the rubber let go and the outer mass just spin around the inner mass. Had never heard of such a thing before.

I had a 2004 Sport Trac, loved it, put 100k on it in 3 years never gave me a second of trouble and not even $1 in any repairs

I had a 1998 Ranger, single cab, 4 x 4 with the straight 6 in it. I sold it right before I purchased my 2019. I sold it to a co-worker, and she still drives and loves the little truck. It has paint worn off in places and the rust has started on the sides she said.

I'm not sure why anyone would do this...
It needs steel wheels to complete that look.

And I dont know why either. Because they can, I guess.

My Father in Law has a 94 Ranger extended cab 2wd his dad bought new. I’ll take a picture next time I’m over at his house. It’s had a transmission, drive shaft and several new front suspension components. . Other than that it’s just been regular wear/maintenance items. He still drives it regularly.

I leased my trucks through the business I owned at the time. I bought out my 2008 Sport Trac when the lease was up partly because they had quit making them and kept it for 13 years. Had the trans rebuilt at 132k but that's a known weak spot. Very trouble-free until it got around 200,000 miles and then expensive things started wearing out or breaking. Blown head gasket was the last straw since the engine has to come out to fix it so I traded it in on the Ranger. It still looked great though.
