It's sad that whatever tools you have to spend money on to get that filter off, may conceivably be the last time you use them, after properly installing filters from here on.
That works out, Harbor fright are one use tools LOL

I have not used the 3-Jaw style, but this style I have had for years and works wonders for the stubborn filters, I had to use this for the (First) filter change.
I had purchased a couple of other brands that should have worked, but their design sucked, and they just slipped due to the design and mainly they allowed the (extension) to hit the top of the filter, well with that design the socket wants to push off the filter.
So, I did some research and found this, and it is recommended by others on here as well.
I can confirm it fits perfectly and snug and the (PLUS) the extension drive does not allow the extension to hit the filter.

This is what I use now - works perfectly:

I’ve never had a filter I couldn’t remove. When all else fails this is the way. Goes on a 1/2 in drive ratchet wrench or 1/2 in drive adapter. It’s a strap wrench for a filter.

I broke one of those which is why I suggested the three arm one.

Dang, that’s impressive! I’ve had mine for probably 25yrs and haven’t broke it. The 3 jaw ones work well also.

Mine did this last oil change.

The filter was stuck on there solid.

The gasket was correctly lubed before install and not overly tightened.

I have no idea how it locked itself on there so tight.

I have one of these for the next change.

Friend of mine has one just like this but the ends keep slipping around the oil filter...

Thankfully I had a different brand/version of this same tool in my tool-bag....

If you looking closely at this Ares-Tool, the arms are long & has "rough" ends similar to a cutting/grinding drill-bit and easily grips any filter.

Yeah, that's not the one I have.

It was just the first pic that showed the configuration.

Did my oil and filter today and my wrench removed the filter effortlessly.

This looks like it would work well on most any size filter. I own a 3 arm model that works very well too, and it fits all the filters I use. It has the external socket stud for the extension as well.

I have seen several variations of the 3 arm style filter wrench, some with just a square hole in the center for the extension.

I guess it depends on what you buy from there, but they have stepped up their game. The Icon tools appear to be legit. I have found that the Bauer power tools are pretty good too. I use Bauer cordless drill regularly, and it has never let me down. My Harbor Freight compressor and shop vac have been going for years too.

I've used basic channel locks. Go in horizontally, crunch down on the edge of the filter and usually that gives me enough leverage to get it turning. Had to do that with the first change and occasionally when it doesn't want to loosen by hand.

I find that they're better than that. I don't mind so much when they get lost or broken or someone else wants them more than I do.
I'm sure he was exaggerating.

When I used to do a lot of oil changes, be it in general aviation, on farm tractors, or my personal stuff, I could usually loosen the filters by hand, especially the ones I had installed. Never had an issue with a leak, aside from the rare double gasket fiasco, which was immediately obvious.

After getting frustrated with the three arm one from Harbor Freight, I bought the Lisle 63600 filter wrench and have had good luck with it. About $8-10 on Amazon.
