I know the 6G forums have a similar topic as to why people are waiting for the new model but I am curious why members are buying 2022's when the 2023's are right around the corner.

When I ordered my truck in August there were barely and leaks of the 2023, let alone of when it may actually come to the US (considering it took a while for this generation to get here). Considering what I know now I would still be on the fence on what to buy. At one end I really enjoy the looks of the current model, I took advantage of the current used car market ( sold my old truck for $4.5k with 250K miles), and the 2023 model was nearly 2 years away. The other end, I do like most of the interior changes. I like having more pockets and spaces to put stuff, the wider truck is nice, exterior still looks really good, potential for better fuel economy. After driving my cousins F150 I am still on the fence with the all digital cluster and information screens, not as much of a selling point as I thought it would be.

Curious on your thoughts?

This gen has proven reliable, I think the design as a whole has a ton of old-school charm, and I'm able to actually buy one and receive it fairly quickly. The 6G NA model hasn't even been shown yet, so I'm thinking orders will MAYBE start being taken next spring or summer. Splash special edition packages also show Ford is planning on building 5Gs into late 2022.

I don't want to wait that long, I'm tired of my cramped 4Runner!

*edit: also cost. I've given myself a fairly strict budget, and the Ranger fits it right now. 6G will almost certainly cost more.

I traded in a Bronco Sport. Dealer offered me more than I paid for it new, so I figured I should cash in while I can.

I do like the 2023 changes, especially the new interior, but I can live with my 2021.

Good money for a trade in now. Only thing I like in the 23’s is a bigger engine. Can always trade in later and will have a newer trade in at least.
It's so stupid right now. My 2007 4Runner is a 2WD SR5 V6 with 175k miles. A base model, only factory option is the roof rack cross bars. Carmax is offering me $5200... and the airbag light is on.

I'm waiting on the Raptor.

I won't even consider until I see how the first year of the next generation works out. Let the bugs get worked out of the first years model.

With everything that is going on geo-politically, chip shortages are bound to continue and the cost to deliver will most certainly go up. I think there is a better value to wait and allow prices to stabilize in order to not overpay.

  • New model bugs
  • 6G model has grown larger/heavier
  • 6G face looks like Maverick, F150, GMC
  • Hood prop rod, no strut
  • Probably has all the same cost cutting deletes 5G 21-22 suffered
  • 5G is the best looking mid size truck period!

Because 1) My lease on my '19 ends in April and I don't want to purchase it. 2) The current Ranger is a proven design and Ford is known to struggle with quality the first year or two of new designs. 3) The way dealers want to throw huge market adjustments on anything new or "hot" means they will be way overpriced for awhile until they become more available. 4) I actually prefer the trim design of the current one compared to the bloated design of the next gen.

Sure the big infotainment screen and all digital gauges will appeal to some, but current screen and XLT gauges are fine with me. The new interior does look more modern, but I don't mind the current one even if it looks last gen Ford.

I was in dire need of a new car. My last car was a 2005 Nissan Xterra and I had just rolled 300,000 miles on it. It started having an electrical problem that I didnt want to spend money to figure out, plus the A/C compressor just went out. (It was the original compressor and freon). Living in AZ A/C is a must, the compressor was going to cost more than the car was worth....

I love my 2022 though. If I could have gotten another 8 months out of my Xterra I would have, I really wasn't looking to buy a car just yet. Things happen for a reason and I am thankful they did. Was able to find exactly what I wanted and walked away with a great deal!

RIP: Xterra! Posted a pic in memory of her!

Great question and lots of obvious reasons and not so obvious ones too.

I ordered a current gen because I couldn't order a Maverick. I waited until the last week of open ordering and the tow package was no longer available, so that ruled out the Maverick for me.

I went home, bummed out, and decided to see what was the next economical truck I could get. We kayak a lot and that's the prime purpose for a truck. And I do love going to the dump too! =D

So I looked at the Tacoma, Colorado, Frontier, and Ranger. Looked at how cheap I could get each with their max payloads and tow capacities.

I had no idea the Ranger was the BOSS of ALL when it came to those numbers. And it came that way with a great modern engine with oodles of horsepower and torque. And $1000, or so, cheaper than the others.

Talk about good luck! I thought that not getting a Maverick was a bummer, but the Ranger will do far more for us (and let us change our future plans for what travel trailer we get).

Overall, I'm really happy and as far as getting this generation?

Like many have said: it's a proven model, Ford's had the chance (in theory) to work out the inevitable first year issues, AND there are a lot of accessories available right now for it.

It would be fun to have a 2023, but I'd like a truck now (well, by summer, hopefully), and I do like the looks and my only gripe is the cheesy Sync version I'm getting (especially compared to what the Maverick has). But being cheap economical means I'm actually okay with it.

On order: 2022 two-wheel drive Scab XL 101A with tow package, build date of April 11 (ha ha ha).

Well I was going to talk about how the Mav and Ranger have the same SYNC system (and the Rangers has more features depending on Maverick trim), but now I see you've got a base unit. Yeah, the SYNC touchscreen was an absolute must for me. I didn't want to muck around with aftermarket.

And the aftermarket change is mega $$$! =(

I only went to 101A so the backup cam would display in the center and for power mirrors - evidently, my needs are simple (or my money tree died long ago!). =D

But it would be nice for Android Car Play and maps ...
