shortened life by running it in S with higher RPMs?. just askin'
Dammit!

Where's that Carvana quote?

My truck has spent 80% of it's life in S. Better sell it now. ;)

I don’t care what the argument is but just saying the Ranger is tested to run 150k miles with no major repairs to the 90th percentile of customers.
Phil's words will love on forever!

No, that’s not true, it just goes into 9/10 less frequently.

But you did hit on the perfect solution to this problem. Simply press the tow/haul button when driving around town or other situations that cause the lugging. I find it completely eliminates the problem without the crazed beast behavior that sport mode unleashes.

Try it, I think you will be pleased.

This.

Tow/Haul is definitely the happy medium between drive and S.

Also, the vibration in the steering wheel does not sound normal to me.

If it truly feels like lugging near to point of killing the engine, which would be required to shudder the wheel, the RPMs would be dipping super low. Idle speed is roughly 850 rpm.

Again, I've never felt this as I normally drive in S until I get on a highway. I push up to drive if cruising 50-55mph. I try not to cruise below 1800-2000 rpms. We have a lot of hills here and I understand the dangers of LSPI.

Tow/haul mode locks out 9 and 10 by default I believe.
Not going to say you are wrong I was wondering the same thing but I have been using tow mode exclusively & the other day I was cruising 65-70 mph turned off tow mode & rpm never changed so I assumed it made it to tenth gear.

Believe me, I've been wrong before! I just haven't seen it shift into 9th or 10th in tow/haul myself. Figured it locked them out and changed the shift points of the remaining 8 to accommodate.

Give it a shot, let me know what you think. Maybe we will both learn something new.

It could be that I have a 5star tune, but my engine never goes below 1300-1400 rpms or so and I don't seem to have the described issue. I had to verify to be 100% sure. It usually only goes down to 1500, but can go a bit lower under certain conditions.
So you like that tune? I’m considering one but I just don’t know yet. If it always keeps your around 1500rpm or higher that sounds like it would be perfect!

Maybe vibration was the wrong word. It’s almost a harmonic resonance that you can feel a little bit in the steering wheel. It’s the low rpm rumble per say. I know the trucks not bogging down or close to stalling but that’s what it feels like. In S or Tow mode no such feeling.

cruse at 35mph in D as you come to a hill and if you don’t step on it you Willmost likely feel the truck Lug a little bit around 1200rpms until it downshifts and all is well again

Resonance is a better word.

So.......after todays post, i have been driving around in tow/haul mode all day. It is the happy medium. A bit rough shifting gears, and downshifting, and a bit jerky, mostly use tow/haul mode,.......well when towing.

Thought it was my hitch making things a bit rough, non torsion hitch, well, i guess it is the Ranger.

I say tow haul mode is a good compromise. Kept my rpms above 1500. No lugging. Might even get an engine brake or 2 also!

I like tow mode as well. It seems to hit every gear and doesn’t skip gears nearly as much as D and holds the gears just a tad longer. So far so good!

I'll take your word for it. Like I said, I drive in a manner to specifically avoid low RPM/High load events. LSPI can cause significant damage over time. Of course we have a knock sensor, but I'm okay with doing my part to try and not use it.

I tried doing this earlier today and yes it does work. While in TH I couldn't get past 8th gear doing 65 mph then I switched it off and at 60 mph it shifted into 9th. I couldn't go any faster as I was doing this "research" on a surface street.

alternating between locking out 9 and 10, or using S Mode, I have zero problem keeping my truck at or above 1500 rpm. Use the tools available.

Still waiting for someone I trust to test the rear view camera access during highway speeds, slapping it into R at 65+ MPH. They say the computer doesn’t allow it to go into reverse but the camera comes on :p hahaha don’t try it but I thought it was interesting.
