How did you keep it from shutting off after 10 mins or so?

I did mine when driving back from the beach last weekend. I was surprised how long it took.
There a "Vehicle Setting" in the LEFT Info Panel (Left of Speedo) on the Dash. De-select Auto Shut down and it won't shut off while idling.

I interpreted Ray's statement to mean he did the whole update in accessory mode - but it shuts off after a period of inactivity. Certainly less than an hour. Does that setting apply to accessory mode as well?

Seems kind of stupid to have to idle the truck for an hour plus in order to apply a software update to Sync3.

Don't think so, but you can give it a try.

I don't recall really doing anything. I did sit there watching it. It's possible I may have pushed a button or something while doing it but I believe I had my trickle charger plugged in. And I was in accessory mode.

Installed the Update. No issues just over an hour. Sync 3 system lag is gone.

Download all the files ---there are three. One is a zip file. I extracted the zip file to the exFat formatted USB, then copied the license to the SyncMyRide folder. I started the truck and started the update, After 1/2 hour I took a drive for about 30 more minutes until it finished.

I downloaded the map file, but unable to open it. I received the following error message "Unable to expand Sync32.zip into Downloads". (Error 79 - Inappropriate file type or format.). I'm using a Mac, so MacOS. Followed the instructions per Ford Sync3 Download Digital Instructions for MacOS. Downloaded the file twice, thinking perhaps the first time it may have been corrupted. My Sync32.zip file is 11.68GB as it shows on instructions. Curious if anyone has experienced this issue.

make sure you have formatted the USB stick as ExFat file system. The truck can't read Mac native format

Updated mine today with no errors, and took 3 hours for some reason. Screen still says 117, which I see is a known issue. I spoke to soon. After starting the truck I got the error message. I see I only have 14 lines instead of 15 in the folder. I'm sure glad it went 3 hours and said no errors until the restart. After getting missing line added, it completed.

Hey Guys,

While looking at the 'about sync' page in my Ranger, I noticed I was on map version 'NA117' and I know a 'NA118' is available. A quick search for 'sync map update' brought me to an official Ford Navigation Map update page here https://syncnavigation.com/ford/home. I put in my Ranger's VIN and Sync ESN and voila - a free map update is available!

You can find your Sync ESN at the bottom of the 'About Sync' page:

Place your order for the 'free download' and grab a 32gb (USB 3.0 fast read/write preferably) thumb drive and format it exFAT. Follow the instructions to create your own update thumb drive and about an hour later you'll be on NA 1 18! Install speed depends on the speeds of the thumb drive so if you have a slow one be prepared to take a drive while this is installing.

The root of your thumb drive should look like this:

And the SyncMyRide folder should look like this:

And after:

Good luck and happy updating!

EDIT: This will also work for any other 2018 and newer Fords that are still on '17 maps. Doing the wife's '18 Edge next!
Thanks for posting this, Josh. Otherwise, I'd not have known. Did mine today during the Ohio State game.

My question is why is this such a pain and so time consuming?

Upon starting the download, if you drive say one hour, will the update continue from that point when truck is started again? Or must it be uploaded all at one time?

It will continue. (Or rather it SHOULD) That's what mine did. Took 3 trips of 45 minutes to complete the update.

I downloaded several times from my email link as I was having difficulties in unzipping the file. Finally got it unzipped and loaded to USB, went to the truck and received error message that is attached. What a fiasco, decided to just break down and spend the $40 and order the USB. Received notice today that it's being shipped, so hopefully it will work this time.

I'm getting the same error code. (My license is in the correct folder. 128gb exFAT USB 3.0 drive) However, after cross-referencing Josh's listed files with the ones on my USB, it turns out I'm missing some files! 5 files to be exact.

4U5T-14G422-CAC.tar.gz
4U5T-14G422-CBC.tar.gz
4U5T-14G422-CCC.tar.gz
HB5T-14G386-TAB.tar.gz
HB5T-14G386-VGA.tar.gz

I'm currently re-downloading the map files at work (snail speed internet). Maybe I goofed up unpacking the zip file before going to bed last night.

I did. The problem seemed to be the zip file size being too large. I downloaded RAR Extractor and Expander. Worked fine except one of the .gz files was in the root folder. Moved it, loaded to a USB stick, and did the update without a problem. Just took an hour and a half.
