Got a notification that the "new" map version, NA2.23, is available for Sync 3. I have two vehicles, both with Sync 3, a '19 Ranger and a '22 Corsair GT, and the maps were available for each. I started with the Ranger as a couple of years ago I purchased the 5-year version. Sure enough, the download was "no charge" and the download went without a hitch.

Install in both vehicles was easy, if time consuming. Driving around in the Corsair took about an hour (at USB3 speeds), but my '19 Ranger is still USB 1/2 and took almost 3 hours to install!

The protocol is to start the install, and leave the USB stick installed until you see the "You can now remove the USB device ... " notification pop up. There are a couple of intermediate segments that pop up a "installation is complete" notification, and the system reboots, but don't be fooled. It's not actually "done" until you get the "OK to remove the USB device ... " notification!! Other bummer is if you shutdown the car and interrupt the install, it has to start up again from the beginning ... so plan on a nice long drive!!

Other than that ... everything went well and both now show NA 2.23 as the current map version.

General question and a specific one to @Minuteman3 :

Can one update the maps WITHOUT updating the Sync version?? So, if your on a lower version of Sync (latest is 3.4.23188) and just want the maps, can you do that?? In either case, I wonder what the processing time for the Sync update vs maps... maps are of course large (1+GB per region) but updating the app might take actually more processing power than transferring the maps and decompressing them.

I was already on 3.4.23188 but the "package" I downloaded from CyanLabs had the app and maps and appeared to "reinstall" app during the update process for a total time of 35 to 40 minutes.

@Minuteman3 :
Did you update both maps and app or just maps
Is/was your USB drive ver 3 capable? (assuming you used the same one for both cars, I guess the answer is a Yes)
Do we know officially that Ranger is only USB ver 1/2 capable?? or is the processor in the head unit the bottleneck??

Edit:
Found this on the Ford Sync website:

SYNC 3

To update SYNC 3, the USB must be:
  • Either USB Version 2.0 or 3.0.
  • 8GB or 32GB.
  • Formatted to ExFAT.
  • Without a password.
  • Completely empty.
Note: If your vehicle is equipped with SYNC 3 with Navigation, you can enable automatic updates via Wi-Fi.

( What are the flash drive requirements when performing a sync update )

I am already sitting on Sync 3.4.23188, so I only installed the maps (NA 2.23)

Clearly, the '19 Ranger is not USB 3!! I believe the head units themselves are probably similar (since they are both running 23188) but in any case the only real difference is the connections - USB 2 vs 3.

I can't speak to the Cyanlabs "package" or their install system. I only use the Ford direct sources for my updates and downloads.

I updated using Fords download, no problems. If it does reinstall the sync update, maybe it includes other undisclosed fixes. Whatever happened with that Wi-Fi driver vulnerability we had.
